BUTTER FOR CANADA

AUSTRALIA'S ANTICIPATION

(Received sth December, 1.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, 4th December. There is absolutely no clanger that the Canadian market will be flooded with Australian butter, said the Trade Commissioner, Mr. MaeGregor, when asked to comment on reports that 20 million pounds of butte rwould bo exported to Canada within a few months. He stated that marketing boards had been set up in Australia to regulate exports, and only such butter would be sent to Canada as were needed 'to satisfy its requirements. Mr. MaeGregor said Australia was desirous of taking every possible step to preclude prejudicing the Canadian dairy industry and "to avoid the embarrassment of the Canadian Government to this end. Butter exports to Canada will be controlled by the Australian Government.. "We will send only a proportion of the disclosed shortage of Canadian production. We have invited Canadian dairying and distributing interests to join us in assessing what that shortage is likely to be. Reports of an alarmist character are regarded as unfriendly to Australia, and are calculated to be damaging to the friendly relations between our countries, which we seek to maintain and stimulate." The whole question of AustralianCanadian trade will be discussed between the Minister of Commerce, Mr. Stevens, and Mr. Parker Moloney when the latter arrives in Canada shortly. James, New Zealand agent hero, states: "Seemingly with a duty of only one cent per,pound, Australia has the butter trade all her own way.. Canada is short this year, and will have to import, and Australia is likely to supply that market."
