AWAPUNI NOTES

PREPARATIONS FOR WOODVILLE

LA POUPEE NOT STARTING

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post") PALMERSTON N., This Day. Pleasant weather conditions prevailed for training operations at Awapuni yesterday morning, the tracks not having been affected to any extent by light rain during the night. The majority of the gallops were carried out on the outside of the course proper. Haulbowline (W. Broughton), who was one of the unlucky runners in the Oroua Nursery Handicap, was sent along over five furlongs in company with King Colossus, and the Top Gallant youngster was going the better at the close after running the distance in Imin 7 l-sscc. In addition to Haulbowline, Awapuni supplies five other nominations for the Nursery Handicap at Woodvillo in La Poupee, Chief Coot Chief Clerk, Teller, Jean Ladosio, and Thermopylae, but La Poupee is considered to be a doubtful starter, and the Tea Tray filly will probably make her next appearance 'under silk at Ellerslie. None of the quintet were asked to speed up yesterday morning. Blacksmith (Bromley), who has disappointed so far in his racing, showed improved form by slipping over sis furlongs in Imin 21sec, the last three furlongs being covered in 40sec. He may yet fulfil the big things expected of him at the beginning of his career. Courageous, who will go north for the Auckland Cup, was worked on the plough in company with Hymgreat, but the Thurnham gelding drew right away from his companion in the run home to traverse the last half-mile of a six furlongs task in SS'/^sec. Merry Damon-(Murray), who will make his next.appearance in the Bolton Handicap, for which he has been allotted topweight of 9st 21b, had his half-brother Merry Melody (Nicolson) as .a companion over a mile on the course proper. The pace was not on in the early stages, and they required 2min 2see to complete their task. _ Merry Damon has been most unlucky in his recent races. , Patearoa (W. Broughton) and Dobbin (Murray) ran half a. mile in 53 4-ssec. The former showed up for a period in his race at Feilding, and, as he has not been up long, he may require a further outing or two before attaining concert pitch. After breakfast Myola (Faulkinery and Mister Gamp (R. Reed) were partners over seven furlongs, the former, with her feather-weight in the saddle, proving capable of beating the Bronzetti gelding home by half a length They ran the first two furlongs in 27 4-ssec, the half-mile in 54 2-ssec, and the full distance in Imin 37see. . ■ Dancing Star (Taylor), who is an excellent, track worker, was going better than Cessation (M'Dqwell) at the close of a five furlongs sprint in Imin 7 4-ssec, after taking 13sec for the initial furlong. Braggart (Faulkiner) had the Hunting Song youngster Trasher (K. yoitre) as a partner over half a mile. Without being asked to do their best, they left half a mile behind in 5G 2-ssec, Trasher being in front at the post. Keddar (Keed) and Skyrider (Green) were associated in a gallop over six furlongs, which was left behind in Imin 22 2-ssec, the former being a length in front at the close. While Keddar has still to prove that he can run out a mile and a quarter, his owner is giving him another opportunity at Woodville, for the Arrowsmith gelding figures in the Bolton Handicap the first day. ; THE JUMPERS. (Reed) and Lady Alophen (K. Voitre), who have been found among the jumpers of, late, reverted to the ranks o£ the flat gallopers when they were sent along over a mile. They left the first two furlongs behind in 27 4-ssec, the halfmile in 54 3-ssec, and the full distance in Imin 51 2-ssec. Lady Alophen saw out the distance in good style. Novar's third at Feilding over the battens indicates that his turn is not far away. Brilliant Light (H. Gordon) and Evening Hero (C. Robinson), both of whom figure iii the hurdle race at, Woodville next week, wefe partners in a round over four fences. They set a fast pace throughout, and Evening Hero jumped a shade the quicker, although he displayed a tendency to run about at his fences. In allocating Brilliant Light 10.2 at his first appearance in the role, the handieapper has hardly given his owner an invitation to fulfil his Woodville engagement. He Whanga (R. G. Miles) fulfilled a similar task alone, but the Acre gelding was a little slovenly at his fences, and did not give the display he had given earlier in company. Lady Mid (Stammers) also jumped four fences unattended. Her fencing was, as usual, excellent, but she was a little slower than Evening Hero and Brilliant Light in getting to the end of her task. % Llandudno, the surprise winner of the Kiwitea Handicap on the opening day at Feilding, was sent overl six fences in company with Royal Flyer (A, E. Stratton) to give quite a fair, display for a novice. While he propped slightly at the first fence, he improved as he advanced. Despite the fact that he has, been set a heavy task at Woodville—he being within 51b of the topweight—he -will probably start in the jumping event in preference to the Borough Handicap. Callamart (Campbell) is another recruit to the jumping game, and the Callaghan gelding was sent a round over four battens to record, quite a promising effort. He is not, ho%vever, altogether a novice ;at the 'art, for he followed the hounds on several occasions last winter. GENERAL. The former northern apprentice, A. Dick, is now attached to W. Hawthorne's stable •at Awapuni. Miss Hastings was galloped on at Feilding; and her tasks have been considerably restricted as a result. Acco, who fell in the straight when putting in a challenge in the Fitzroy Handicap at Feilding, did not suffer any material injury, and is in light work. Elicit aiid Locarno, who rejoined Mrs. M'Donald's team recently, are being restricted to road work. It is not intended to race Locarno this season, but he will be hunted. Moutoa Treasury had her first race for some time at Feilding, but she was slow to begin, and was never dangerous at either start. Her new trainer, A. Quinlivan, is attempting different tactics with the Paper Money mare, and is restricting her gallops to a minimum. The Wellington owner, Mr. W. R. Kcmball, had three of his Cape Horn youngsters in the Oroua Nursery Handicap at Feilding, and it was generally credited that Sailing was the member who finished very fast to fill third berth. Such was not, however, correct, for the daughter of Martian Miss, White Squall, was the representative concerned.
