ABRUPT END TO FLIGHT

Miss (Winifred Spooner, the British am roman, who,-with Flying-Offi-cer Ed wards, left Croydon yesterday on an attempt to beat the record flying tv lie to Cape Town,, was forced down /by engine trouble, in the sea off th !e Italian coast last night. Tr ie machine floated, and after a long,/ wait for help Miss Spooner swa: 91 two miles through a choppy sea /to the shore and roused the inhal ritants of the small village of Belmc *ite. Fishermen rescued FlyingOf ficer Edwards and towed in the ac iroplane. . .Both Miss Spooner ■ and Flying--0 fficer Edwards received minor head injuries. ■:' An aeroplane has been sent to Miss kS>pooner's assistance by the Italian Air 3>linister, General Italo Balbo. / Miss Spooner, who became a pilot in 1927,. has made a number of historic ■flights, and has several remarkable escapes. She received the woman's trophy of the International League of Aviators in March.
