FIRST WOOL CARGO
BUSIER SHIPPING PERIOD
The Commonwealth and Dominion ■liner Port Nicholson was to leave AuckJand this morning for London, via Panama, with the first New Zealand wool |cargo for this season. The vessel has a fairly large consignment of wool on board comprising lots that were sold at the Auckland wool sale last month, and she is scheduled to reach London on 9th January, in good time for the January sales. She also carries a considerable amount of general cargo. The Port Nicholson will be followed tiy another wool-carrier, the New Zealand Shipping Company's motor liner jßangitane, which is to leave Auckland at noon on Saturday, and is expected to reach Southampton on Bth January, and London on the following day—the feame day as the Port Nicholson. The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Mahia 5s to leave Auckland next Wednesday ifor London. During tho past few months overseas shipping, so far as New Zealand is concerned, has been comparatively slack, as is usual at this time of the year, but the busier summer period, when the staple products off the land are iavailable for export, will commence the next few weeks. A number «f ships are listed to clear the Domin--son towards the end of this month, and ;fhey will be followed by others during jthe summer. ■ With the signing on of the Union 'Company's new Monowai, and the resumption next week of the Maunganui fa the intercolonial service, conditions Jiave been improved as regards seamen seeking employment, although there is said to be still a large number of seamen unemployed. Indications that the coastal trade is becoming busier is provided by the fact that the Himatangi, after lying idle for some time has been purchased by the Anchor Company and placed in commission, the same company having purchased for the coastal trade a small motor-ship recently built at Auckland.
