CAPTURE OF MISSIONARIES
ATTEMPTS AT EESCUE
SHANGHAI, 3rd December. Troops are leaving Paota-Chen in an! attempt to rescue Mrs. H. D. Hayward I and Miss E. Gomersal to-day. Foreign j missionaries captured and unreleased in China now total 24. Government troops are fighting Communists at Honan in an attempt to rescue Mr. Nelson, an American, and Mr. Tvedt, a Swede. They were defeated, and emissaries to the Communist camp were not allowed to return.
Mrs. Hayward and Miss Gomersal were stripped and robbed while on a journey by river. Later they wore taken from their bandit captors by Monguls.
