GENERAL REGRET
TRADITION BROKEN
THE POLITICAL ASPECT
(Beceived 4th December, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. • The "Sydney Morning Herald," commenting on Sir Isaac Isaacs' appointment, says:— "We are sure we represent the widespread feelings in Australia in declaring that we regret profoundly the innovation and the fracture of an Imperial link of inherent importance, with the extra significance added that it was one of the last visible links remaining." Mr. T. K. Bavin, Leader of the Opposition in the New South Wales Assembly, comments: "It is a matter of groat regret that the time-honoured system of appointment of men from the Home Country has been departed from.'' Mr. J. G. Latham, Leader of the Federal Opposition, says: "It would appear now that the Commonwealth Government, a party Government, has, in effect, chosen the Governor-General. If the Commonwealth' Government actually 'advises' the King in this mattor in the same way as it advises the Governor-General to appoint officers to various positions, then the GovernorGeneral must be regarded as really tho representative of tho Government |of tho Day."
