WAYWARD BOYS.
SCBIE KESTIUINT NEEDED
Damage to the ilowers in public reserves i hag been done by hooligans in Lower HwtC | lately. On a rucent evening at about 9> J o'clock, tho caretaker of the Eiddii'ord | Park caught two youths walking across | flower beds. When he asked for their | | names and addresses they refused to give 8 them, and used insulting language to him. \ \ Words led to blows, and the police were i s called. One of the youths escaped, but j 1 the other was taken to the police station ~ | and qui-dtioued, and later his companion | s was apprehended. |v! Yesterday they appeared in the Child- a roll's Court at Lower Hutt before Mr. | T. B. M'Neil, S.M., charged with assault | and with walking over a tlower bed. Both pleaded guilty to the assault, but not guilty to walking on the flower beds. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate told the younger of the boys* who was not sixteen years of age, that it was evident that he needed some restraint. He would be placed under the supervision of the Chikl Welfare Officer for two years, and juld not be allowed to smoke. It was not desirable, that he should be getting up at 3.30 every morning, to go on a milk round. The best thing he could do* would bo to get work out of Lower. Hutt altogether, for b was likely to come to a bad end if ho continued as at present. To the other defendant, aged eighteen, a chance was given also. He was convicted of assault and ordered to come up for sentence if called .upon within twelve months. On the charge of walking on the flower beds, he was convicted and fined 10s. "I'm afraid you don't realise the seriousness of this. You should think a bit," was the Magistrate's advice to him. :
