LUCKY ESCAPE
LIQUOR LORRY CRASHES
PAEKAKARIKI MISHAP
Two moa had a very narrow escap* from serious injury late yesterday; afternoon when a motor lorry on which they were travelling from Wellingtoa to Levin plunged-over a bank on the PaekakariM Hill. The lorry, which was carrying a load of bottled beer, was owned by Macarthy's Brewery. It was going down the hill towards Paekakaviki, when, after passing a slip ou the roadside, it met a motor-car' on a narrow portion of the road coming up. Th« , driver of the lorry, George M'Millan, pulled over to the outside of the road and stopped to enable the car,to pass. When the lorry was, stationary tho bank gave way beneath it and the vehicle crashed over the side, capsizing as it went. The cases of beer were thrown off and the majority were completely smashed. The driver and another man named E. M'Kay were sitting in the enclosed driver's cab and were carried on with the lorry until it came to rest some distance below the level of the road. Fortunately the men' in the cab escaped with minor cuts on the hands and face and abrasions. Tho lorry, which waa badly damaged, was lifted back to the road and brought back to Wellington this morning.
