SCHOLARS' CAREERS

Air. Lovelock was born ou the West Coast, on sth January, 1910, and received his early schooling at Teniuka and Faii-lio, being Dux of the ,Fairlie School in 1922. For a year he was a pupil at the Fairlie District High School, and from 1924 to 1928 he was at the Timaru Boys-,' High School. He matriculated in 1925. In 1922 he gained a Junior National Scholarship, and in 1925 gained a Senior National Scholarship. The following year he qualified for a Higher Leaving Certificate. In 192S he was Dux of the school, and won a University National Scholarship. During 1929-30 he studied medicine at Otago University. In 1929 he

passed all sections of final Intermediate Examination. As far as sport is concerned, he represented his school at football in his boyhood days, and when at the Timaru Boys' High School took an active p t art in football, cricket, athletics, boxing, tennis, swimming, fives, and gymnastics. In 1924 he broke the I junior record for the half-mile. In 1926 he was the holder of three senior athletic championships and broke . the senior record for the half-mile. In 1928 he won the school boxing championship, and was awarded a medal for being the most scientific boxer. • In tho same year he held four senior athletic championships, and broke three senior athletic records: —quarter, half, and one mile. Last year he won the Otago University mile championship, and was runner-up for the Otago provincial championship. He won the provincial championship this year. He has always taken a keen'interest in the administrative side of school and university life. He intends to study medicine at Oxford. . Mr. Watt is 22 years of age, and was born at Boulder, Western Australia. He came to the Dominion in 1913, and from 1014 to 1920 attended the Eemucra District School. During the next five years he attended the Auckland Grammar School, and for the past four years had been a student at tho Auckland University. From 1928 until the present time he has been a lecture demonstrator in. the chemistry department at the college. In 1923 he won a senior national scholarship, and in 192(5 he gained a university entrance scholarship. He secured the Sir Geoijge Grey Scholarship this year, and also took the Degree of. bachelor "of Science. During his, term at the Auckland University he has studied mathematics and chemistry, and last year he j

was first for New Zealand in two of the chemistry papers. His athletic career has been an excellent one, and lie has broken several records on the track, both at the Auckland Grammar School and the Auckland University. In the 1927-28 season he was provincial 880 yards and 800 metres champion, and represented Auckland at the Dominion championships, besides being a member of the champion relay team of New Zealand. During the past season he was again provincial 880 yards champion. He has also played football and taken part in school cricket, tennis, and swimming. During his university career Watt has held important positions iv the athletic club and scientific society of the university. He intends to pursue further his research work in organic chemistry.
