TAX RETURNS
ALLEGED FALSIFICATION
BIG PROSECUTION
(Received 3rd December, 3 p.m.) LONDON,, 2nd December. The Inland Revenue Commissioners charged Theophilo Jean Baptisto Desnos, a chemical manufacturer, at Richmond, Surrey, with falsely under- j stating by £18,802 his . supertax re-j turns for the seven years 1921-27, also for submitting false returns claiming relief for the three years 1914-17. These included rendering alleged false accounts of the Tasmanian Eucalyptus Oil Company from 1910 to 1925. The total alleged omissions amount to £100,000, which are liable to £40, 000 in. taxation, of which £35,200 was paid. Desnos said that he won £85,000 in gambling at Monte Carlo in 1914-15. The oil company had branches in London and Melbourne. It is alleged that Desnos held the majority of the shares, and that it was disclosed that the profits of the London business were concealed in the Australian, namely, £16,000, which therefore never paid British income tax. Desnos pleaded that ho was unaware that ho was liable to British as well as Australian tax. When challenged lie made no admission until after several official interviews. The case was adjourned.
