AWAMUTU STREAM AREA
GOVERNMENT GRANT FOR WORK
Advice has been, received by Mr. Walter Nash, M.P., that the Government has decided to increase the amount of their offer ill connection with the improvements in the Awamutu Stream area, Lower Hutt. The Lower Hutt Borough Council is to consider the matter at their meeting on Thursday' night. (.'lf the negotiations are carried through successfully," said Mr. Nash to a "Post" reporter to-day, "there will be a considerable improvement in the area, particularly in the portion of the Government settlement. The works provide for a new culvert in Elizabeth street, the filling of the swamp area on both sides of Elizabeth street and near White's Line. The total t cost is estimated at £3300, the Government grant now being £2930." He said that he was pleased to know that the Borough Council had been co-' operating in connection with the undertaking, and expressed the hope that the council, at its meeting on Thursday, would decide to make their contribution (£400) required so that the work could be commenced almost immediately, thereby giving some relief to the large number of married men unem-, ployed in the borough.
