NEW YORK, 30th'November. Doctor James Breasted, director o^ the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, has disclosed the purchase of "an archaeological treasure-house* for the purposes of exploitation, comprising the site of the ancient city of! Armageddon and the surrounding teri ritory, for 3500 dollars from an Amerii ' can widow residing in England.
Armageddon,' a name used in Kevela* tions XVI. 16, signifies "the mountain; of Megiddo." The reference in tha passage in Eevelations is probably t» Megiddo, but some refer it to the plaia of Esdraelon in Galilee and Samaria, famous as a battlefield. Esdraelon, or Plain of Jezreel, is the Scriptural nams for a valley in Palestine, extending from Mount Gilboa westward to Mount Carmel. It has been, a rioted battlefield in ancient and modern times, from. Gideon's victory over the Midianitesto Napoleon's over the Turks in 1799. Lord Allenby won a victory over th» Turks at Megiddo in the Great War. Armageddon is described in Scripture as the scene of the last great battla which results in the overthrow of th» armies of Gx>g.
