CONFERENCE FAILURE
CANADA AND PROTECTION
TEEATY WITH AUSTRALIA
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. \ (Beeeived 2nd December, 11 a.m.) OTTAWA, Ist December. Back from the Imperial Conference, the Minister of Trade and Commerce, Mr. H. H. Stevens, stated that the Commonwealth Minister 'of Markets, Mr. Parker Moloney, will arrive here in the middle of the month to negotiate a new Australian treaty. The effect of the new pa<2t wouia be for Canada to buymore- from Australia, thus removing the four to one advantage held by Canada. Canadians, said- Mr. Stevens, were now buying many articles from foreign countries that could be supplied by Australia. The same applied to New Zealand, but the negotiations with that country were more difficult because of the higher duty on butter. "The Bussian Five-year Plan is succeeding all along the line and Canadians are doing their country a disservice by pretending otherwise," said Mr. Stevens. "The Soviet will soon be a live competitor with Canada." Mr. Stevens added that failure q£ the Imperial Conference was due to Britain's disturbed political situation. It would have been better to have held an election in Britain first to produce definite proposals for the Conference. More protection would greatly aid Britain.
