AT TAKAPUNA

BIG HANDICAP TO ROYAL DOULTON

SOME GOOD RAGING

(By TelegraphO (Special to "The Evening Post") AUCKLAND, ttst December. After showers this morning the weather was fine for the conclusion of the Takapuua Jockey Club's Spring Meeting today. ' The racing was again good and two first day winners in T/Hiite Wings and Chief Jewel were again successful. . There was a lengthy inquiry into the running o£ Ammon J&a,. who finished second in the Raking Handicap, and the trainer, J. T. Jamifjson, was censured for not giving his rider' more definite instructions. The jockey, B. Ludlow, was also censured for not f lading Ammon Ra more vigorously. . / The five shilling totalisator was again well patronised. The machine handled £25,586 15s, a decrease of £7435 15s on the amount invested on the second day last year. The'total for the meeting was £62,103 10s, oompared with £75,522 10s last year, a decrease of £13,419. VAUXHALL HANDICAP. On the strength of his good third in the Takapuna Plate on Saturday Karangapai was installed a solid favourite over Operatic for the Vauxhall Handicap, and he duly scored, although he just got \\p at the finish to beat a big outsider, Merry Lv, who attempted to win from end to end. Valmarie, always up handy to the leader, was a close third, and Good Idea fourth. Next to finish were Land Measure, King Swift, Great Emblem, and Royal Siurvey. The winner is a promising three-year-old by Peach Brandy, from Star Attraction, und is trained at Ellerslie by J. Chisholm. His finishing run was a good one, as he was a long way back early. Merry- Lv surprised "by staying on much betted than usually, while Valmarie and Gop(J Idea both ran sound races, always being in the picture. Operatic was a disappointment, failing to run on after befeng well up most of the way. KAWAU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Investors received a reverse in the Kawau High-weight Handicap, when the favourites, Trishna and Stonehcnge, failed to return dividends. The race proved a good thing for Luminary, who gained a break of five lengths in the first halfmile, and stayed on to win by a length and a half from Patutahi, who beat Stonehenge by a short neck. Trishna was fourth and . Glenstar . fifth, the others all being well beaten. Luminary usually runs his best races in front, and when he was allowed to make his own pace in the early stages by galloped in his best style to win nicely. Patutahi and Stonehenge were always closest to the winner, and Patutahi, who was an outsider, stayed on the better at the finish. Trishna never looked like a winner, as he was well back early, and his run was finished when he got within striking distance of the leaders at the turn. STANLEY HANDICAP. The Stanley Handicap was decisively won by Carl Idem, who finished too strongly for the others when the pressure was applied in the straight. The winner had not won for nine mouths, but his prospects were not overlooked, and lie was fairly solidly backed, although the actual favourites- were Gay Idea and Biddy's Boy. Red Lion hopped out smartly, and he led into the straight from Gay Idea, Carl Idem, and Biddy's Boy. In

tlie run homo Carl Idem beat Biddy's Boy by a length and a half, the 'fast finishing Tambourine being half a length back third, with Red Lion fourth. It was not a good field, but the winner raced like an improved horse. Red Lion was doing well in front to the turn, and then stopped quickly. He should be a better horse for the_ race. Gay Idea was ridden with the whip in the first furlong after being slow away, and failed to go on at the finish. She should do better at the country meetings. CAUTLEY HANDICAP. The Cautley Handicap was remarkable for the wonderful run on the rails secured by White Wings shortly before the field reached the home turn. Awamutu and Leitrim were quickly \n front from Kinp Ford, with )Wy Rose and White Wings several lengths behind the others in the rear. With slightly over v two furlongs covered King Ford went up on the inside of Awamutu and Leitrim, and they raced abreast for another furlong ahead of Royal Tea. Near the two-furlong post White Wings made a sharp dash from tiie rear, and she went right through on/ the rails to be in front at the turn. Afterj' this she. had no difficulty in winning from Royal Tea, who beat Paganelli by a lengt'A. Lucy Rose was fourth, and King Fotd fifth. The winner might have won even if she had not secured such a remarkable jftm, although she would not have foumj it easy. She was.a good third fancy ial the betting, Leitrim and Royal ' Tea 'oeing favourites. . , ■ « ST. ANDREW'S HANDICAP*" The St. Andrew's Handicap was productive of a good finish, Royal Doulton, who has previously shown, a partiality / for the track, winning narrowly from Mosque. Royal Doulton gave some trouble at the start, ajid was not in line when ,the tapes were released, losing a couple of lengths. Eager Rose, the favourite, and Flying Prince made the early runni'/ig, while Royal Doulton soon ran up 1 iandy ahead of Mosque. Royal Doulton dashed up to the leaders at the half-miW, where she and Eager Rose drew oijfc t» lead round the bend from Flying- Prince/ and Mosque. Once round the turn Eager J£ose weakened, and Royal Doulton stalled off a challenge from Mosque to win by a J neck. Eager Rose was, two and a half lengths away third, and True T3lood foijrth. Royal. Doulton registerc/d a smooth performance. Mosque also ran his best race for some time, ami shouj/l be worth watching at Tauniarunui and at Te Awamutu. RAKINO H/tNDICAP. As on the first dv.y J. T. Jamieson again supplied first and second in the two-year-old event, tlae Rakino Handicap, in which he. had'tl tree runners. Saturday's winner,. Chief .Jewel, was the favourite, and he scored a;/tain iv decisive fashion after leading into the straight with Hoihouia. His stablen jate, Ammon Ra, finished on well to get; second, three parts of a length ahead ol Princess Bede. Speedmint was fourth, and Hoihoma'fifth. The winner is very useful, and will continue to pay his -way, although he may not be really good. . Ammon Ea's effort was a particularly goc<l one for a first start, and he should be worth keeping in mind for Christmas. Ffe is a half-brother to that good mare Pr.odice, and is by Limond, bo that he is bred the right way to gallop fast. Ammon Ra's future is full of possibilities. PUPU,KE HACK HANDICAP. Form worked out well in the Pupuke Hack Handicap, as the three place-getters in the sajine class on the first day again filled the! places, although they reversed the orde^i: somewhat. Clopton, Haviland, aud Maiiawhenua were favourites, and the summing up of investors proved fairly correct./ as Manawhenua just beat Cloptou in a hot 'finish. Sir Mond was right up third, f and Brompton l'ouuth. Thr/ winner is on the improve, aud he would have been unlucky to lose, for he' was on the rails at the turn, and thejji had to come out round three horses. Cloijpton ran another solid race, and Sir M'jnd was also doing well under his,big weight at the finish. Haviland and Spring Al)bey went well to the turn, .Spring Abbey being a likely improver. NGATARINGA HANDICAP. ' Ti Tree completed a successful meeting for J. T. Jamieson by winning the Ngataringa Handicap, giving her trainer his ■fifth win, and K. Voitre bis fifth winning ride. Honiton and Sir Russell were favourites in a good betting race, with the winner at a nice price. Tetrachate and Honiton carried the field along to the straight, with Ti Tree and Sir Russell in close attendance. Ti Tree came home strongly, and gained the decision by three parts of a length from Sir Russell, Who defeated Lady's Boy by half a length. Nancy Lee was fourth, and Honiton fifth. Honiton and Tetrachate were made too much use of in the early stages, and failed to run on at the finish, where Ti Tree did well to score an overdue win for Mr. C' Gr. Macindoe, whose colours have not been 'Very prominent of late. Itesults:— Vauxhall Handicap, of 200 sots; seven furlongs.—l Karangapal, 8.11 (R.
