r fhe Wellington Congregational Men's :\ .League held its closing meeting o£ the year :. in the Cambridge Terrace Hall on Monday. '•, 'Pea for, about forty members was served ;, by the ladies of the Terrace C'ongrega- ■; tional Church. Mr. Morgan Davies, the -.', president, was in the chair. £ Mr. Walter Nash, M.P., gave an address , oa the subject, "Social Needs and the >' Church's Opportunity." Mr. Nash out- :. lined the social duty o£ the Church as '. being, in brief, to treat all men as bro- " thers, entitled to whatever can help them . to reach out to k full life, in means o£ " education, opportunity for health and lei- ' sure, and service to the community. He '■ said that he doubted whether, under mod- ; crn conditions, it was possible for a,man ■ | to hold the principles of Christianity in business and at the same time to acbieve : financial success.' He spoke of the peril of _' tlie Church, advocating its religion by too ■•' much speaking1 of it, without carrying out ;' its principles iii eveiyday life. He dwelt / upon the' various kinds of social legislation in New Zealand, and he urged that this ■ was the beginning of a new. and happier '.; order of society based upon the ideas of .■; Christian love and service. , • The address provoked an interesting discussion, which chiefly centred round Mr. '■' Nash's criticism of business life. A hearty ■>" vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Nash, ;. and the meeting closed with prayer.
