IN THE TWILIGHT

ATHLETES AND CYCLISTS

SPORTS AT BASIN RESERVE

The best to date this season in point of the number- of competitors, the programme, and the keenness oE competition, ■was the sports meeting held on the Basin Reserve from 6 to 7;30 last evening by the Kiwi Amateur. Athletic Club, one of the youngest in Wellington. Unfortunately the weather was not in keeping with everything else. There was a northerly wind, cold and blustery, that made the conditions unpleasant. However, it did not interfere to any extent with the competitors when once warmed up. Except in one event—the one-mile walk —entries were good, and competitors appeared to have caught up the old spirit that pervaded the evening meetings of a few years ago. The ha'ndicapper (Mr. D. G. Paris) had done his task, well, and to him must,go some of the credit of the several fine finishes, seen during the evening- '■:.,'.. R. M'LEOD SCORES A DOUBLE. There were two sprint events for the ladies, and m each, as in the sprint events for the men, the finishes were splendid. In the filial of the 100 yards open handicap about seven of the runners reached the tape almost together. • The judges sorted out R. P. M'Leod (6%yds) as first and J. T. Fleming (3yds) as second. C. H. Jenkins, the scratch man, won his heat in 10 2-osec, and was close up in the final, run in one-fifth of a second less, -which was good going against the wind. M'Leod was also successful in gaining first place in the 220 yds open handicap, thus scoring a good double. There was a keen battle between W. B. Ogg, S. C. Fergusson, and C. Thompson for second place. Miss J. Murray was in form, in the ladies' events, gaining, a place in each. The close finish in the 75 yards event gave the judges some trouble, no third place being awarded. 0. A. Williamson,, the young Wellington Club middle-distance runner, who has been showing splendid form, ran oil' with first place in the 880 yards handicap from a field of about twenty starters. C. G. Gibbons, the ex-Wanganui runner, who started off the 30 yards mark with Williamson, was second, and C. Campbell, virtually scratch man, was third. YOUNG RIDERS SUCCESSFUL. There were two races, for the cyclists— an SSO yards event for juniors and a two miles open handicap. In each two youngsters, P. Eyton and W. Wheaton, were successful. They were well treated in the longer race, and it was not until the last lap that the older riders, led by M bane (scr), with C. Ericsson (35yds) and I. N. Eobinson (35yds) close at hand, made much impression. The gap between them and Eyton and Wheaton was reduced m the final sprint. Gane led the bunch home, after a tussle with Ericsson, to take third place. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
