FATHER CHRISTMAS AND THE CHILDREN

(To tho Editor.) Sir, —AVith the reappearance of Father Christmas in the shops, the children of Wellington will be indulging in their usual dreams of well-filled stockings when he visits their homes on the 24th Becem, bev; but I .am afraid that, •with so many married men out of employment, there will bo a distressing number of the wee ones who will wake up on Christmas morning to find their stockings empty. These little ones will hardly understand why Father Christinas has deserted them. Cannot we citizens of Wellington get together and do something to avoid disappointing them? Possibly those interested could each contribute threepence to a fund, the proceeds of which could be sused by*i-a-xol-uiitajrjfk:pnimitteo-'for' pur-.

chasing toys and distributing to children o£ the unemployed; possibly also headmasters and headmistresses of private schools and of public schools in the wealthier suburbs could ask for voluntary contributions of cast-aside toys, which could be collected and distributed by the same committece. I feel sure that wives of Rotarians and other public-spirited women would bo only too glad to undertake the work and that some leading firm of carriers would provide transport free of charge. Addresses of the married unemployed could, no doubt, be obtained from the Labour Bureau. Unless something of this kind is done, hundreds of little ones, who are in no way to blame for economic troubles, will spend a joyless Christmas. I enclose my own contribution of threepence.—l am, etc., TEACHER.
