WEATHER PROSPECTS

While an. anti-cyclone has continued to envelop northern New Zealand, during the week-end a westerly depression has. "been crossing the South Island. The, combination of these two pressure systems has caused strong north to west winds, which have blown with gale force at places in and southward of Cook Strait. Generally, however, the weather has remained fair with mild to warm temperatures, but a few isolated places in the western districts have had showers. Arthur's Pass ro-ports-having had 135 points in the last 24 hours, Okuru 60 points, Queenstown 42' points, and Greymouth 27 points. These were some of the largest falls reported. Auckland experienced fine weather on both Saturday and Sunday, with moderate winds between north and west prevailing. At Wellington, the weather was iino on both days, but a strong north-west wind made conditions rather unpleasant. Christchurch had a fair to cloudy day on Saturday, and a slight frost during Saturday night. Sunday was spoilt by a hot north-west gale, which blew all day. It was fine at Dunedin on Saturday, but on Sunday a strong north-west wind was. blowing, and rain fell during tho afternoon. Tho forecast is for moderate to strong westerly winds, later backing to. Routherlies. Tho weather will be mainly fair at first in eastern districts, but unsettled in western districts with scattered sliowers, later showers becoming fairly general.
