BETTORS AGAIN OUT

LLANDUDNO AT TALL PRICE

With tlie exception of the hurdles, favourites had not had a good day, and it was almost too much to expect that the public would be on the mark in the Kiwitea Handicap, the final event of the programme. The race ivas to provide thebiggest turn-up of the day, the little-fan-cied Llaududno, who had not had a rpce for nearly three years, finishing on surprisingly strongly and beating his opponents very decisively. ~ Llandudno is "a nine-year-old bay gelding by Formative, from the Field Battery mare Holywell, dam also of Coll, who is now trained at Riccarton. He had only recently been put back into work, and looked still on the big side when paraded. He is owned by Mr. K. M'K. Duncan, in whose colours Otairi had won the hurdles, and is now trained at Awapuni by L. Knapp, who also prepares Otairi. C. Broughton, his .'rider, has not had much of a run lately, and this was his first success this season. In the race, Limited, Malayan, Llandudno, Wanderlust, and Arisus were the first to show out, the last-named improving quickly and. following' Limited down the back and into the straight, where Llandudno, Malayan, Maui, Arikinui, Tenacre, and Paiko were nearest :of the others. Llandudno ran up to the front at the top of the straight, and came home an easy two lengths winner from Malayan, with Paiko another length and a half back third. Arisus, Arikinui, Limited,' Pedestal, and Maui were next. j Malayan was a better favourite than Arisus or Tenacre, with a drop to Maui and Paiko. The winner paid over a quarter of a century. Malayan attempted to: steal up along the rail in the straight, while Broughton, Llandudno's rider, was> watching Arisus on his outer, but the, move was unsuccessful. ■ Paiko came very fast in the run home, and had Malayan; not blocked his passage on the rail he> would have been second; it was a marked! improvement on the astonishingly poor! form he showed at Levin. Tenacre was' placed outside a hurdle at the start, buti he moved off well and was within striking? range most of the way. Arisus was not,' good enough, aand Maui failed to run on; Limited, back from hurdling, showed ai lot of .his. old-ability on the flat, and wasf beaten only at the finish. . Denier threw! iis rider when lining up, and the start-/ er did not wait for him.
