TAKAPUNA MEETING

ALISON CUP TO SARGOIM

FIVE SHILLING "TOTE" POPULAR

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, 29th November. Delightful weather favoured the opening o£ the Takapuna Jockey ■ Club's Spring Meeting to-day, and there was a large \ attendance. The five shilling totalisator proved popular with investors, and was well patronised. However, the totalisajtor returns were down £5982 15s. The machine handled £36,516 Iss, compared -with £42,500 on the first day last year. ■All the winners were well backed, but Sir Mond was the only actual favourite to score, and investors received severe reverses by the defeats of Havaspot, Tennakoe, and Paganelli. MELROSE MAIDEN STAKES. There were nineteen runners in the Melrose Maiden Stakes, and it was a good betting race, with Operatic, Chief Joy, and Gay Idea best backed. Gay Idea and Chief Joy were' quickly iv front, and th/ey led for four furlongs, when Chief Joy and Operatic, who had run up fast on the outside, drew out slightly to shorn-

the way into the straight to Camp Princess, Gay Idea, and Tui Mint. Chie£ Joy stayed on under pressure to win by threeparts of a length from Camp Princess, who beat Operatic by a neck. Gay Idea was fourth, followed by Tv; Mint, Royal Survey, and Spring Song.\ The winner is a godd' galloper by Chief Ruler from the imported mare Podokes, and is one of J. T. Jamieson's team. He was unlucky last season, but promises to be a success this term, as he is not- yet at his best. Camp Princess and Operatic wont well from outside post positions, and both had to cover more ground than the winner. HIGHWEIGHt HANDICAP. The Tiri High-weight Handicap was productive of a good1 finish, Trishna, the favourite, finishing on strongly to win from Gleustar and Sleepy Sol. Armenia led tor half a mile, when Ruby Dawn took up .the running for another two furlongs. Then Patutahi and Always had a short turn in the lead, to give way at the ten furlongs post to Sleepy Sol, who led round the bend from Patutahi, Glenstar, and Luminaiy, with Trishna coming fast. Trishna maintained his effort in the straight to beat Glenstar.by three-parts of a length, Sleepy Sol being half a length away third. Stonehenge was fourth, followed by Patutahi, Luminary, and Kairuri. The winner came from a long way back, and should be difficult to beat again on Monday. Trishna is a five-year-old gelding by Seremond from Mallaig, and was purchased in Australia last February by Mr. G. Paul. Sleepy Sol made his effort a trifle early. BOROUGH HANDICAP. Tenakoe-. was over twice as well backed as Nancy Lee for. the Borough Handicap, but he failed at the finish after being unduly bustled in the early stages and > missed a place. Nancy Lee led for two ; furlongs, when she -was joined by Sir I Russell, who had gone very fast from the . extreme outside at the barrier. At the ; end of three furlongs Tenakoe went up :on the onside of the leaders, and then he and Sir Russell drew out. Tenakoe was ~ beaten at the turn, an! Sir "Russell led .; into the .straight from White Wings, who finished, on well to beat him by a length and a hAlf. Honiton was half a head away ;, third and Branson fourth. j Patiently ridden, Sir Russell might have j won. Tenakoe must also have done ■ better if he had been ridden differently. ,/ Branson ran very wide round the home >. turn, otherwise he would have been a little ~' closer. The winner was at a good price ' and won well.. . . ... \ i . TAKARUNA PLATE. :; Good betting on the Takajmna Plate saw: ( ! Havaspot installed a pronounced favourite over Biddy's Boy and Awamtitu. Only one side of the barrier went up when the starter released the lever, and some of the horses on the outside were prevented from getting away. Fortunately the official was able to recall the field, although Awamutu , and Biddy's Boy went a few furlongs before they could be pulled up. Biddy's Boy led early to give way at the end of three furlongs to Tradesman, who led ' into the straight from Havaspot, King i Ford, Tetrachate, and Volimond. In the ; run home Volimond did best to beat Tetra- , chate by half a length. Karangapai was ': a neck away third and Eossire was fourth, :; followed by Havaspot and Tradesman. ", Volimond's effort was a good one, as ,: she was in' slight '.rouble near the turn, ! and then had to come on the-outside. ! Tetrachate, at a good price, ran easily his f best race, and Karangapai came from a 1 long way back with a line rattle at the finish. Rossliire was also running on, j but Havaspot weakened at the end after I looking a likely winner at the turn. ALISON CUP. The three-year-old Sargon registered a ) pleasing performance iv winning the Ali- ' son Cup and responded in very determin.ed fashion when asked for a final effort lin the straight. Speculation on the race was heavy, and Eager Rose was five shili lings better backed than Sargon, who had a good call over Desert Glow. Flying Prince and Desert Glow carried the field ' along until five furlongs from home, when : Eager Rose slipped through on the rails and led into the straight from Sargon, Corinax, and True Blood. Once the pressure, was applied Sargon asserted liis sup-, eriority and won well by a length.-from Eager' Rose. True. Blood was :hajf a length back third, and Corinax fourth. , Next to finish were Bennie and Nassock. It was not a strong' field, but Sargon's performance was a good one, and he is seemingly a solid stayer. Eager Rose re- • gistered a solid performance and should • soon win. True Blood -went a sound ' race, and Corinax went surprisingly well considering that he is not yet at his best. 1 All the others failed badly. . ' ■ . L CAMBRIA HANDICAP. v i The C.J.C. Welcome Stakes winner Tea Chat was backed down to odds-on for the j Cambria Handicap, but he had -to strike > his colours to his stablemate Chief Jewel, I who is trained by J. T." Jamieson for Mr. •F. Earl. Chief Jewel and Hoihoma led > into the straight just clear of Tea Chat, and Chief Jewel finished on well to score Iby three parts of a length. Princess Bede, 1 who finished fast was a head away third, . and Speedmint fourth. Next came Hoihoma and Royal Gallant. L The winner is by Chief Ruler, from i Spangle, ' and is a smart galloper likely !to improve. Tea.Chat, who was steadied ;in behind after going, a furlong, hung in • when his rider drew the whip in the straight, otherwise he would have been a '. trifle closer. Princess Bede was slow,to '. begin and laso received a slight check across the top. Hoihoma and Royal Galslant displayed plenty of speed but both j. failed to run on.. . . ■ • ■ . PONUI HANDICAP. ['■ Making his second appearance for'the ■ day Sir Mond • was made a good favour- • ite for the Ponui-Handicap, and. he .'.duly ; scored/ although'he was a shade lucky to ;■ beat Manawhenua, who struck a little [ trouble along the back. Sir ,Mond and: '. Clopton were quickly in the lead from Manawhenua, and they carried on the . running right into the straight, where ; Manawhenua -and Brampton were in ; close attendance. Sir Mond battled on ■ well at the finish and just held off Mana- ! whenua. Clopton was a head away third, | and Neil fourth. Next came Brampton , and Claremore. Manawhenua is on the improve and ■ should win soon, while Brampton and i Clopton should also be dangerous the next : time they are produced in similar com--1 pany. : CHELTENHAM HANDICAP. i Paganelli was made favourite, for ' the1 ; Cheltenham Handicap, but after missing ■ the jump-out he failed to show anything like his true form, and missed a place. Leitrim soon ran to the front, and he just led into the straight from Royal' Tea, | who was clear of Billikins and Treasury. Leitrim outstayed Royal Tea at the finish and beat him by a length. Lucy, Rose ;■ was two and a half lengths away third, and Treasury fourth. Next came Paganelli and Billikins. Leitrim was always going like a winner, although he ,was hard pressed by Royal Tea at the turn. Royal Tea is on the improve, and will be a better horse for the race. Paganelli displayed some speed for a few furlongs, but did not appear dangerous at any stage. Over the last three furlongs Treasury made a creditable showing After, failing to begin with his usual dash. Kesults :— Melrose Maiden Stakes, of 200 sots: weight 8.0; seven furlongs.—2 Chief Joy (K.
