VICTORIA'S SOLID INNINGS

MATCH WITH WEST INDIES

MELBOURNE, 30th Novembers The weather was perfect for the resumption of i the cricket .' match between the West Indies team and Victoria though the conditions were in favour of the batsmen, who settled, down to'play a solid game. The bowling was accurate, but lacked variety; the fielding was splendid,'though the field was not well placed. Ryder was in 95 minutes. He hit four boundaries, and was well caught at deep leg. . Ponsford' was painfully slow in scoring 100 in 209 minutes. Rigg also was much quieter than usual. ■■-.;■ The visitors were severely handicapped, as Constantine, after bowling two overs, was unable to-continue through a strained back, but ho fielded brilliantly. 1 The crowd frequently heckled the batsmen for slow play. Ponßford took 239 minutes to pass -. Headley's score of 131, whereas Headley had taken only 141 minutes. When the partnership had realised 200 Ponsford was well caught at mid-off. He batted 286 minutes and hit thirteen 4 s, but lacked enterprise. Rigg made his.century in 158 minutes. He then had a go. at the bowling and was missed at 126 by Headley at deep leg, off Griffiths, but in the next over was dismissed by a smart catch. He batted for 179 minutes, hit twelve boundaries, and gave a neat display. ■ Although tiring, the visitors stuck gamely, to their task. Barnett and Darling had narrow escapes of being run ,out through quick returns to the wicket-keep-er. As the day progressed the bowlers became very tired, and the attack was rather feeble without Constantine. Parling, who is a stylish left-hander, gave a free display, but later quietened down. He hit up 00 in 85 minutes. Barnett, who also is a left-hander, gave a nice 'exhibition. One hundred came from; this partnership in, 57 minutes, Barnett scored 50 in an hour, but the crowd was disappointed at the absence of sixers, the batamen consistently declining to take risks.1 Darling was in for 114 minutes, and Barnett for 69 minutes.
