NOVEMBER WEATHER

LOW TEMPERATURES

November was another cold and stormy month. 'Indeed, it was the third month this year in which the mean temperature was very close to the lowest on record, even if it did not pass it. As has been pointed out before, the mean temperature at Kelburn is lower than at tho previous Wellington stations owing to the elevation. The amount cannot yet be stated but it is probably about a degree. The mean temperature for November was 52.Sdeg. The previous lowest recorded was 53.6deg. in. 1888, the next being 54.1deg iv 1884. The year, 1888 therefore, was the only November that could have been as cold as that of the present year. Wind and rain were both above the average. Sunshine was only slightly below tho previous average, but moresunshine is recorded' at' Kelburn than at tho previous station. The month was characterised by a number of marked southerly changes which were preceded by very black' skies and . accompanied by heavy squalls of rain and hail. Northerly gales blow on the sth, 14th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 23rd, 24th, 26th, and 30th: In the twenty-four hours ending at 9 a.m. on 19th, there wa-s a "run of 528 miles. Thunder storms occurred on three days in connection with, southerly changes. Snow lay on the Tnvaruas all through the month and fell to a very low level on 23rd. Snow also fell on the Bimutakas, and on the Orongorongos. One frost occurred, en the night of 29th. ■ The mean maximum temperature was oOdcg.j the previous average being 63.3 deg. Tho highest maximum "was 65.4 deg. on loth. The mean minimum was 4G.7 degrees, aud the previous average was 50.4deg. The lowest minimum, 30.2 d.eg., was recorded on 29th. The approximate mean temperature was 52,8 deg., the previous average being 56.8 deg. The mean minimum temperature on the grass was 42.9deg., and the previous average was 43.9deg. The lowest was 28.1deg. on 29th. Tho mean "run" of the wind in 24. hours was 303 miles, and the previous average was 258 miles. The mean amount of cloud at 9 a.m. was 7.4-10 clouded, the previous average being 5.4. Tho total hours of sunshine amounted to 199.4, the average for November being 200.7 hours. The rainfall for the month was 4.02 in, which fell on eleven days. At Karori reservoir, 4.14 in fell, the number of rainy days being thirteen. The Karori fall is 29 per cent, above'the- average for November.
