Charles Evans, aged 28, was shot in the abdomen liy the captaiu of a Hawkesbury River vehicle punt during a brawl on the vessel. Evans is at the point of death. He and five companions refused to pay fees on the puiit, and after a wordy warfare a .fierce fight commenced, the men attacking a deck hand, who was flung on the deck and kicked and punched. Tho captain, seeing the deck hand being unmercifully battered, fired two shots over the men's heads. x\s this had no effect, a third shot was fired, and Evans fell. He was rushed to hospital bleeding profusely. The five men are being charged with assault.
