CRICKET

WEST INDIES TEAM

MATCH WITH WELLINGTON

The cricket match between the West Indies representatives and a Wellington team ended abruptly at the Basin Keserve yesterday afternoon, when heavy rain set in shortly after 3.30 o'clock. Up to that time the conditions had been quite pleasant, for the afternoon's play, and after four •wickets had fallen cheaply, a gooH stand was made by two of the visiting, players. The abandonment of the game was particularly unfortunate for the spectators, as it deprived them of the opportunity of seeing L. N. Constantino batting, this fine all-rounder having previously performed attractively in the iield and. very successfully with the ball. After the 100 mark was reached, steady-progress'was-maintained by Birkett and Martin, 'the former having a good range of strokes and the latter varying strokes to leg with an occasional shot to the off. Good fielding helped to keep the runs down, and the slow outfield also reduced the value of some scoring efforts. The partnership was proving a valuable one, having put. on over 50 runs. Newman kept the pair quiet and bowled two maiden overs in succession. The total was 119 when Blundell relieved Parsloe (none for 23 olf eight overs). There was only a single from Blunder's over, but in Newman's next over Birkett snicked a ball to leg for 3. Birkett, batting freely and using his long reach to advantage, forced a ball from Blundell through cover to the fence, and by adding a single the vice-captain reached '10. At this stage rain set in, and the match had to be abandoned. The score when st'imps were drawn was 12S for four wickets. Details: WELLINGTON. s First innings '. 195 WEST INDIES. First Tunings.
