PARENTS PROTEST
MARRIED WOMAN AS TEACHER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) OAMARU, This Day. . The principle of the appointment of married women teachers was strongly opposed at a well-attended meeting of J householders of Totara School last night. The meeting was called as the result of a proposal to appoint a young married woman whose husband is in a good position, and who has been married only nine months. Out of a number of applicants her position was the highest on the grading list. The following resolution was carried unanimously:— "This meeting of householders views with utter dismay the appointment of a married woman teacher as assistant at Totara, on the grounds, firstly, that from an economic standpoint her husband is able to provide for her; secondly, the appointment would cause unemployment of a young teacher; thirdly, in view of hostility, the. interests of the children would not be furthered, as a large number would be withdrawn from the school, which would suffer in grade, necessitating the transfer of the headmaster '"
