BUS TURNING

IN CROWDED STREETS

NEW RULE SUGGESTED

That there is a danger to pedestrians caused by the turning of buses in JTcatherston street was recognised in a suggestion from the Bylaws Committee, put before the City Council last night, that the Railway department be requested to arrange in future, when motor omnibuses enter the city and desire to take up a position on the authorised stand at Lambton Station, for the drivers to be instructed to proceed along Featherston street in a southerly direction and turn east into Bunny street for about two bus lengths, and then make the necessary turning in Bunny street and proceed back along Featherston street to tho stand. Councillor Morpeth said that the corner was a very busy one, and the practice of turning buses there most dangerous. He did not think that tho council should permit any motor vehicles to turn in the main streets. The proposal did not get away from the danger at all. He recommended that the buses run up to Whitmorc street, and come clown Stout street. Councillor Hildreth said that the idea was that the buses should turn to the left into Bunny street, and turn there. Councillor .Mitchell said that all buses should be made to go round the block, and not turn in the streets at all. Councillor Luekie said that the report was the recommendation of the traffic ofticers. It was not the portion of Bunny street between the Printing Office and Government Buildings, but the slightly-used left-hand part _of Bunny street, where there was little pedestrian traffic, that was suggested for tho turning. The other suggestions meant crossing an. immense amount of traffic. Councillor Morpeth said that huge pedestrian traffic daily passed and crossed Bunny street on the left, coming from ana going to trains. It would be a mistake to adopt that route. Councillor Hislop said that if the buses made their turn in Bunny street they would cross Featherston street, where they were supposed to create congestion, once. Under Councillor Morpeth's suggestion they would also cross Featherston street once, but he doubted whether they could swing in Bunny street on one lock, and consequently would cause congestion in that street. He thought Councillor Morpeth 's suggestion better, and - moved that the clause should go back to the committee for further consideration. This course was agreed to.
