A NEW HIGH SCHOOL
MR. ATMORE FINDS THE MONEY
PRAISE AT NAPIER
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") NAPIER, This Day. The Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atm'orc) laid the foundation stone of the new Napier Girls' High School yesterday. Mr. P. Ashcroft, chairman of thtj board of governors, traced the history of events which led up to the function. Some years ago the board had met Sir James Parr, the then Minister, who promised that the provision of a new Girls' High School would be treated as a matter of urgency. Later they had waited upon Mr. E. A. Wright, and that Minister had promised that a sum of money would be placed on the Estimates for that year. In the case of the present Minister of Education, he not only gave the board a promise, but gave them a grant, and, having put his promises into action, Mr. Atmore was there that day to lay officially the foundation stone of the first portion of the new school. They deeply appreciated the practical help the Minister had given them. Miss D. M. Arthur, lady principal of the school, expresesd pleasure that the new building would be so spacious and imposing. For that they had to thank Mr. Atmore, who had discarded the plans of 1926 for something much finer. Thanks were also due to the Minister for making possible by generous grants the development of the grounds. Miss Arthur touched briefly on the Education Committee's report. She said a report of such far-reaching possibilities was bound to arouse many differences of opinion, but in the* very raising of debatable points the Minister had done something to lift education in the Dominion from the slough of stagnation which threatened to choke it, and had given it new life and vigour.
