HUTT VALLEY ORGANISATION
Sir Alexander Roberts, Mayor of Lower Hutt, reported to his council last evening that he had, at the invitation of Mr. W. Nash, M.P. for Hutt district, attended a meeting along with representatives of all Hutt Valley local bodies, to discuss the problem of relieving unemployment in the district. Ho was sorry to say that there was still a large number unemployed, and.the indications were that the trouble might continue during the summer. It would be several months before the Unemployment Board would function, and in the meantime it was necessary that action should be taken. Tho conference had decided to set up small committees, and it was proposed to meet fortnightly to consider the reports of these committees. Councillor Campbell said the idea was an excellent one, because when the Unemployment Board did function it was the district which had an organisation which would receive first consideration. In reply, the Mayor said the idea was to help to relieve present unemployment, and to co-operate with the board when it was in operation.
