HERE AND THERE

Horses Returning. Jayson, Golden Wings, and Esteem are being returned from Kiccarton this evening, but Merry Damon will probably have another race at the meeting. Palm contracted slight kidney trouble last week, and that was the reason why he did not run in the Cup. Reflections on Cup. My Own and Gay Crest helped to make a solid pace in the New Zealand Cup last Saturday. They were still well in the picture when the straight was reached, but gradually faded out in the rim home. In the Shade did not begin smartly in (ho New Zealand Cup, and was still a long way back six furlongs from home. Ho put ill'a good run over the concluding part of the race, but he was no match for Nightmarch, and Concentrate when the test of stamina was called into play. Merry Damon did not stay the two miles of the New Zealand Cup, and he had no punch left in him after the field had gone a mile and a half. His showing was a disappointment to his connections, who expected him to be up with the leaders at the finish. The first half-mile of the New Zealand Cup was run in 52 4-ssec and the second half in 53 l-ssec* Then the pace was turned on, the third half being reeled off in 51sec, and the last half in 49 l-ssec. Failures in Stewards'. Courtesy and Great Star showed exceptional speed in the early stages of the Steward's' Handicap, but they were well beaten when half a mile had been covered. Courtesy's performance was particularly disappointing, for she had every chance. The colours of Hunting Day, the favourite for the Stewards' Handicap, could be I MEETINGS TO COME. Nov. 12. 15—C.J.C. Toxeuma's prospects in the Stewards' vanished at the start, for Autopay, who drew just outside of him, came across him just as the field was setting off, and the race was half over before he hit the ground with his customary freedom. Thereafter he accelerated quickly, and finished about tenth, which, in the circumstances, was a creditable effort. Breeding of Nightmarch. Nightmarch, the winner of the New Zealand Cup, was bred by Mr. G. A. Kain, who has established a stud in South Canterbury. He was the first horse to bring his sire, imported Night Raid, into prominence, and his deeds during the last two seasons have brought for Night .Raid a great reputation as a sire of stamina. Nightmarch, however, doubtless owes some, of his-staying powers to the influence of Martian, the sire of his dam, Marsa, a daughter of Nantes, by Shipmate from Huguenot, by Aprcmont from Martyr, and so back through Flora M'lvor to imported Manto, who established one of the best of the old New Zealand lines. Autopay's Fine Win. Autopay, the winner of the Stewards' Handicap, has been a useful performer since the beginning of this season, and his success last Saturday made him look above the average three-year-old form. The merit of his performance was enhanced by the fact that he was one of the outside division at the barrier. He is another good advertisement for the Blderslie Stud, being by Paper Money from Trebelli 11.. an imported: mare by Thrush from the St. Simon mare Dramatica, a half-sister to Birkenhead" who left hosts of winners in Hawkcs Bay. Trebelli 11. was imported by Mr. .7. Grigg, of Longbeach, and previous to being mated with Paper Money, she had produced to Ampelion, Clarenceux, Saxby, Gay Lad, and Thurnham, but none of these progeny had figured as winners. A Proved Matron. Philomela, dam of the Welcome Stakes winner Tea Chat, is fifteen years old, and is by Bezonian from Philomel, by Birkenhead from Arethusa, by Dreadnought from Dryad, by St. Leger. Others from this mare are Monoxide, by Boniform (dam of the three-year-old Red Royal), The Wensnm, who raced successfully in Melbourne, and Francolin, by Paper Money, who did .well in the South as a two-year-old. Membo an Improver. Membo, who won the Spring Hurdles at Riccarton on Saturday, but fell in yesterday's race, is a recent recruit to the jumping game, which he took up for the first time last winter. He showed some form at the Grand National Meeting, where he was unlucky, as after finishing first in a hack event he lost the" stake on a complaint that he had interfered with Paris at the last hurdle. It was something of a coincidence that, after winning two hurdle races at southern meetings in the interval, he should have scored his most. important success at Riccarton, with Paris again as his nearest attendant. Membo stayed on exceptionally well, and should not be long in winning other good . hurdle races. • • . Well-conducted Racing. Owing to the indisposition of Mr. I<\ C. Cotter, secretary to the Canterbury Jockey Club, supervising duties at the present meeting have been assumed by Mr. J. M. Griffiths, secretary to the Wellington Racing Club, while Mr.L. G. Hill, secretary to the Dunedin Club, is also lending his assistance. With the help of an efficient staff the arrangements throughout are being carried out to the satisfaction of all concerned. Answer to Correspondent. B.H.—ln 1929, Rapier, ridden by F. Voi.ffht: in 1930, Star Stranger, ridden by H. Gray.
