TREATMENT OF CATS
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Several of my countrymen have made representations to me regarding statements made at the Magistrate's Court at the hearing of the case against a Chinese charged with cruelty to catsl According to the newspaper reports it was alleged as a defence that in China all cats were confined in small boxes during the planting season. This statement is absolutely untrue. It is a fact that in i China cats are highly valued, and when bought and sold a proud purchaser will keep the cat in a roomy basket fdr a day or two -until it has become acquainted with the people of the house. lam assured by those who' are well acquainted with the rice-growing districts that it is not the custom to keep cats in confinement during the planting season, nor indeed at any other time save as already mentioned. I am sorry to trouble you an such a matter, but I hope you will agree with me that international courtesy forbids the dissemination of such libels without the opportunity of contradiction. —I am, etc., V OU TSIN SHUING, Consul for the Republic of China.
