TROTTING

METEOPOLITAN CLUB'S MEETING-

PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW

The Spring Meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will begin at Addington to-morrow, and be continued on Thursday and Friday. This is the most important trotting meeting of the season, and year after year it increases in popularity with the sporting public. The club gives good stakes at all its meetings,. but it makes a specialty of the Spring Meeting, when the New Zealand Cup is run. For some years the second day was considered the "off" day of the meeting, but with the running of the New Zealand Cup in divisions, .which was inaugurated last' season, and with the final on the second day, Thursday's racing has become much. more. important. _ The coming meeting has its usual distinction • of. attracting the best horses in commission,' and the public can look forward to seeing keen contests, fast times, and good finishes. It only requires the weather to be favourable for the club to | have a good meeting. ' CUP DIVISIONS. / The first day's racing will see the divisions of the Cup run and the big race has now grown so-popular that it attracts keen attention. I.4s—First Division. . Talaro ......... scr- ydsbhd Jean M'Elwyn .. scr Imprint 12 Linkraan ..]... scr Kohnra 12 Harold Thorpe ... scr Author Jinks .. 12 King Pointer .. scr Terence Dillon . 24 Padlock 26 A point to attract attention in this year's' Cup is that the first division does not seem to be 'so strong (as the second one. This, however, .may not prove to be the case after the divisions are decided. There are ten horses in the first division and 'brie fewer in; the second. Of those on .the limit.in; the first division, Talaro, who is getting up in years, has not been racing .'well, and he will require to show considerable improvement on his recent racing and; .feack form to have any chance. That, holiest, little pacer, Jean M'Elwyn,' showed' at GreymOuth that she Still retains her speed and stamina, in addition to h^r: reliability, but the Cup looks a,hard).proposition for her. Linkman is, an'Xirilucky Cup candidate. Last year he was io"fine form a month prior to1 the ; race and;''then., trained off. This season, he; wa? coming on well and promised to :str.iip very fit, but'he struck his knee and has!.had'to be cased in consequence,' so that she- is not likely to be at his ;best bri.the-day. Harold Thorpe, a new aspirant for ;.Cup honours, raced particularly \Vell( last season, but his effort at Wellington: was y not- impressive. King Pointer ; won the- National Handicap in August, beating)a' strong ,'field.,.. He is a trine slow^away from .'the barwer, but a great stayer. 'He showed good form at Wellington, in J.the. Cup Trial Handicap. He looks to :haVe-improved since August and he can be inspected to be Very hard to beat in the division. The Nelson representative, Imprint, is a solid pacer, specially good in. heavy going, and he showed form at Greymouth. Kohara won the Cup in 1927, but it is doubtful if he is as good as at that time. He is Auckland's representative in the division. The South Canterbury gelding, Author Jinks, during last week was responsible for a brilliant work-out that brought him into prominence for the big race. Author Jinks has great speed and when at his best he can go two miles. The Oamaru representative, Terence Dillon, did not race well last season, but at Oamaru on Labour Day he created a favourable impression by his showing in the sprint event. Terence Dillon, if in his best shape, should race well. Padlock,"Vho is the back marker in the race, was reported to be out of work, and as he is very unsound, it is not at all likely that he will be prominent at the finish. It looks as though King Pointer, Author Jinks, and Terence Dillon will fight out the finish, possibly with Harold Thorpe or Imprint in fourth place. , 2.25 —Second Division. Logan Chief ... scr - yds bhd Travis Axworthy scr Native Prince .. 12 Dun das Bfty ... scr Wrackler 12 Daphne de ■ Oro scr Jewel Pointer .. 12 yds .bhd - Logan Park ... 24 Kingcraft , 12 'Of the nine horses in the second division, four are on the limit, a similar number on 12yds, and Logan Park on 24yds. The' limit horses do not seem likely to be prominent at the finish. Logan Chief will bo troubled by the distance. Travis Axworthy, whose brilliancy is unquestioned, looked lust season as though he would stay on with age, but his recent efforts over sprint courses have not brought him into extra favour. . He had every chance at Wellington, over a mile and a quarter, yet Wrackler, who is best over a longer course, beat him very easily. Dundas Boy, a slow beginner, did not impress in his race at Wellington, and it is doubtful if he is in as good form as was the case last year. Daphne de Oro will be one of the outsiders of the field, but the small pacer will be racing in highgrade company, which seems to be a trifle too good for her. Kingcraft, on 12yds; looks a greatly-improved pacer. Last season he was ri hot favourite for his division, which he won with ease, although he was fractious at the barrier. He started favourite for the final, but misbehaved at the barrier and practically (took no part in the contest. Provided he goes off right he will be very troublesome. Native Prince has both speed and stamina and is racing much more solidly over two miles than formerly. Wrackler is favourite for tile race, and his brilliant effort at AVellington, where he won most decisively, gained him additional support. Jewel Pointer is not the pacer he was, especially over two miles, and he is not likely to qualify for the .final. Logan Park, on 24yds, won his division last year with the greatest of case, and was just beaten in the final by Peter Bingen. He has not done a great deal of racing since the last Cup, but ho lias come through a solid preparation, looking a picture and a great credit to his trainer. The placings in the second division should be Kingcraft, Wrackler, Logan Park, and Native''Prince. Of the nineteen in this year's race, ten started last year, the new horses being Jean M'Elwyn, Harold Thorpe, and King Pointer, who are in- the first division, and Logan Chief, Travis Axworthy, Native Prince, Wrackler, and Jewel Pointer, who will race in the second division.

This race usually provides one of the sensations o£ the day's racing, as a big improvement in time is usually necessary for a. win, under favourable conditions. Captain Wrack was unreliable in Wellington,. although he put up a couple of useful races. Curfew Boy is a good stayer, but Erin's Lynn has not been pleasing in her recent work. Hostess has plenty of speed, and she may be the best of the limit division. Tenedos is certain to be. well-backed from 12 yards, and should beat Tactless; and Proud Dillon. Of those on 24 yards Bay Nut raced well at Oamaru, but badly at the end of the week at Wellington. Tenedos, Hostess, and Mac Dillon may fill the places. 3.4S—DOMINION• HANDICAP,' of 1000 .sots; jinhoppled trotters; 4.35 rdass; two wiles. Engagement ... scr yds bhd Ukulele Lady ... Admiral Bingen has speed enough to carry him to .victory, if his stamina will hold out. Cannonball raced well when last at Addington. Of the limit division Writer and Admiral Bingen look the best. The Hawkes Bay-owned Raima went a capital race amongst the pacers last week at Wellington. Kempton has lots of-speed, but he has done'little racing of late. John Mauritius is going satisfactorily in his training, but he is in the best class, and will require to show improvement. Koro Peter worked out a

good two miles recently, and is much favoured for the race. The finish should see Raima, Koro Peter, and Admiral Bin« gen in the places. 4.2S—VICTORIA HANDICAP, of 400 sots; 4.35 class; two miles. Cyone has plenty of speed,1 but the last quarter of a mile may trouble her. If Sunchild has improved since August he should have a good ehanee. C.-S. Donald's pair, Sunny Bob and Sir Author, will command respect. On 12 yards Waka« taua, who is a- fine stayer, may beat Joha Noble., Grand Light is on ; 4min 30sec, but as he qualified for the Cup on a time test he is entitled to respect. Altogether this should be one of the best races of tha ' day. The final issue may be / betwee^ Sunchild, Wakataua, and Grand Light. Nelson Tasker and Vendoine appeal aa likely to run well. Muriel de Oro did not show up at Wellington, but she may, do better on, the dirt track. At Grey* mouth Vendoine wag defeated on the sec* ond day by Bessie Logan,'the • pair star^ ing from the same mark. ; Kennerley'a' mare now has a. 12 yards start from, Bessie.. Logan, and.she should beat her this? time. It is - possible' .that several of the Cup candidates will not start, so that Tom. Thumb may run well off 12 yards. The finish may ;be fought out between Tom Thumb, Vendome, and Nelson Tasker.
