ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

There was a large attendance at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon at the celebration of the. anniversary of the foundation of Sunday schools by Robert Raikes, in Gloucester, one hundred and fifty years ago. The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, presided. Addresses and Scripture readings were given, those.who assisted being the Rev. J. Hubbard,. the Rev. B. D. Patchett and Pastor G. .Carpenter. Mr. C. Howe was organist, and MrW. Jl. Howe choir leader. ■ In his address, Mr. Stallwqrthy said that in his earlier days he was a Sunday school boy, and he was proud of it. The Sunday school was one of the best places on earth; and some of the-best lessons he had learned were associated with the Sunday school. He congratulated the teachers on their glorious calling. They were laying the foundation of a new world. He looked upon Sunday - school teachers as being real Empire'builderf "The teachers, lie was sure, realised their great responsibility. The great need of mankind was to know God aright, and to bring the blessing of that knowledge into all the activities of life. . Auaddress on the history of the Sunday school movement, and the activities of the union in England, was delivered by Mr. W. E. Howe, president of the Wellington Sunday School Union. Jlr. G. Carpenter said that .Robert Eaikes was one of the most remarkable men associated with the Christian Church during the last one hundred and fifty years. The speaker referred to the foundation of Sunday schools by Robert Raikes, sketched the progress of the movement, and emphasised the supreme importance of the work. LOWER HUTT AND PETONE. Anniversary celebration services of the foundation of Sunday schools were held at the Lower Hutt and Petone. The meeting at the Lower Hutt was' presided over by Sir Alexander Roberts, Mayor; and that at Petone by the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie). Addresses iwere delivered by Mr. Usmar at Lower Hutt, and Pastor Garner at Petone. There was a large attendance at both services. . .; . ...• .;
