Federation of University Women. Tho University Women's Club and the Wellington Federation of University Women held a combined meeting at the University Women's .Club . recently, when Dr. Ada Patterson presided. Miss Bainforth gave am interesting account of her recent visit to Honolulu, where she was a delegate to the Pan-Pacific Conference. A hearty vote of thanks tvas accorded iher. A short musical programme arranged by Miss Clachan followed. Miss M. Wcsney sang several charming little songs, and Miss R. Reid played two delightful violin solos. Miss E. It was stated at the.annual meeting of the Wellington Centre of the Koyal Life-saving Society that advice . had been received from the London council of the society that Miss Nancy Webber and Miss Mavis Landon-Lame had been granted the diploma of tho society. In view of the great h,anour attaching to the diploma, it was decided to make a public presentation of these awards at the opening of the Maranui Club's new pavilion on 6th December. Fashion and Superstition. Many girls in Melbourne are wearing their stockings inside out, states an Australian exchange. This fashion follows the appearanco on a racecourse recently of a young woman racegoer with hor stocking reversed. It is said that the fashion was "discovered" by a girl who clressed so hurriedly that she put her stockings on inside out. She was probably too superstitious to change them. The stockings, when so worn, appear to Itavc a softer sheeii aud a smarter appearance, and the back seam, of course, is more prominent. Petonc Free Kindergarten. An interesting talk on "Simple Hygiene and First Aid" was given recently by Mrs. Wallace Sterling, B.Sc, to tho members of the Petone Freo Kindergarten branch and was much appreciated. It was stated at the meeting that tho Mothers' Club is working energetically tor the gift sale which will take place at the end of the month. The members of the branch are anxiously watching the erection of the new sch.ool building which is nearing completion, and are hoping to niovo in, if only for a brief time, this year, as there are so many of the little five-year-olds going to infant school next year, and they would like them to have a little experience of the benefits of the new school first. A portion of the playground was found to be ready for levelling. Some of the fathers haß formed a "working bee," and as soon as the fence is completed some planting will be. done. In all, the new building is the subject of great interest. The half-yearly jumble sale will be held shortly. Home of Compassion. Tho Key. Mother and Sisters of the» Homo of Compassion held their annual gift tea at Island Bay on Saturday afternoon. In spite of the threatening weather, a large number of friends visited the Home, and many very useful gifts were- received by the Sisters, who are very grateful to all for their generosity. The Key. Mother greeted the visitors, and all who wished were shown over the building by .the _Sisters. A delicious afternoon tea, which had been contributed by friends, was. served in the dining-room, and was under the direction of Mrs. Kylands and a committee of women. Among tho helpers were Mesdames Eylands, J. Dwyer, P. Nathan, M'Evedy, Miller, J. Hughes, Oakcs, Hendry, Murphy, Giles, M. Cronibie, Maloncy, Butler, Misses Fagan, M'Donald, O'NeU, Phillips, and Cannon. During the afternoon music was supplied by an orchestra comprising Mrs. Skeddon, Mrs. Martinelli, and Mr. Walpole* Diamente Gloves. "Gloves spangled in diamento sound singularly unsuitable for a womaii motorist, but they have * definitely practical use, and dozens are being sold by a London store," says a writer in the "Daily Mail."
