BRITISH INDUSTRY DULL

PROTECTION URGED (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY' 6th November. In the House of Commons last night a private member's resolution urging the Government to take immediate measures to stem the decline of activities in tlje iron and steel industry was debated. From the Conservative benches the adoption of protection by tariffs was urged. It was pointed out that wages in the industry here were about double those paid on the Continent. Subsidies were also advocated. On behalf of the Government the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter E. Smith, refused to consider a subsidy or tariffs, and dwelt on the importance of reorganisation. Mr. Smith stated that consultations were proceeding still between representatives of the Government and of the steel industry on regional organisation.
