As a sideline for the Lithgow small arms, factory, tie Defence Department has contracted to manufacture 100 talkie machines without electrical equipments for £10,000, says the Sydney '' Daily Pictorial.''. ~'.... . This is a practical application of the Government'3 policy of saving staff. dismissals by using the plant for commercial purposes. Already sis machines have been manufactured and installed in New South Wales theatres, . with satisfactory results. .■■>>' The Government intends to confine its new activities to lines in which.it will riot compete with established pri-vately-controlled industries. Shearing machinery, which is not made in Australia to any extent, may be tackled also at the Lithgow factory.
