GERALDINE MEETING

INCREASE. IN INVESTMENTS

BIG EVENT TO DESERT SOXG

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "Tho 'Evening Post.')

GERALDINE, 27th September

:. The Geraldme; facing, Meeting .wab". concluded- iiiv.m'ixed'.:c6nditionß. Rain fell overnight, ; making.-the . track heavier than on 'Thursday.,' The weather was fine in the morning^biiVihe sky clouded later and'there were ;s.cyeraj.;sniart:slipwers' during '■ the; afternoon.'-' Good /.fields contested most of the; events,: with -some fair sport. After racing: for.?many" years on Thursday and Friday, tho second day was shifted to Saturday on this occasion, with excellent results'.iTherc Was., a' drop .in ' the

totalisator figures on tho first day, but this was- more than made up to-day (£10,218 10s), and the meeting showed an increase of £900. This is the first increase of the' season. ' i HURDLE RACE. Pangolin confirmed the first day's form by winning the hurdle race very easily. He took the.load.early,, and..though/Star Stranger 11. tried to go-with him a£tcr tho first half-mile, she had nochance. Pangolin made the opposition _look'.eheap, and was easing up. at the .finish.. His, failure at Ashburton is put down to a peculiarity of which his-rider was ignorant—that" he will not race on the rails ..with horses outside him.: He is iu'great order, arid he may race at Trenthain nest month. Haze ran a better race'than, oil .the .first .day. Troilus showed no dash, but s his form was all wrong,. as -will be 'seen.-before* long. " ■'-. ;. -"■ ■.:■'. ,:.;:;F.f.., /■; ■ ■■■■;•■ . WAINUI HACK HANDICAP. • Royal Love,- who.'met trouble .on. 'the first day, but finished on'strongly, was expected to do much; better .in. the Wainui Hack Handicap, and: was backed confidently. He was' never further back than fourth,, and had the race well--in hand whenthe straight was reached.. J.He: is a well-grown three-year;old '■' by : imported . Royal Divorce, arid he. shaped; like making a good horse.'; Silver. Salver, another three-year-old by Tea Tray,;-'failed in tlie, last few strides after'being .prominent;'all' the way.'and 'it was lefti.to : his'bracket mate, vßoya) Limon.d,;. to snatch second money from Night f Recital on the\post. Silver Salver will.', win-Soon, aM so will Night Recital,' a half-brother to Gay Sonnet. The first day's wjniier, Bellbird, lost her chance at the; start, ..while. Tracsoiio cannot go more than. five furlongs, v ,-,..;■. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. J Desert Song confirmed Miis .1 first day's form by winning the.President's Handicap easily from a useful field—the .best <he has met so far. He.had the: luck to be on the move-when the.'barrier.was released, and a break of three• lengths. which';he. secured was a great >help." There ;is no doubt; however, that Desert Song is a much improved horse, ami he will do bet- ■ lei1' yet; Rascal ran' a sblid' race ,to.finish second,'though hia: stabler'nia.te'was catch-' ing 'him at the finish.! These .two -are. very well.' Rascal" had three".seconds ; ■on end and he ■will win soon.,Black;Duke'had every chance, but was beaten wlven the straight was reached. Malmsey, was 'apparently not ready. fo.r another, hard" effort, and the only horse .§he -beat was.".the first day's winner, vßlaek; -Mint, who. rail one of his bad races. ' / ■ . ■', . .''•; ■'■ ■'••;.; STEWARDS'; HANDICAP; ' !:. The Stewards' Handicap >as 'a.duel, as the third starter,-Town;-Bank, dropped out from the" start. On Top followed Arrowmir to the straight, where his rider made'a sudden dash. This gave On Top the victory, as AiTOwmir was catching him

a»-;uB at the post. They are a speedy pair, but On Top has something to do yet before he can rank as a good horse. GLADSTONE HANDICAP. Four o£ the twelve runners in the Gladstone Handicap had -the race, to themselves all the way, but even then there were great changes. Assemble and The Dove established a long lend,, but the hot pace settled both of them. At-semble had the measure of The Dove turning for home, then Painkiller shot up and seemed to have the race in safe keeping.-'She tired in the last fifty yards, and Some Tofi came with a late rush to beat her on the post. Some Toff will win again now that he has struck form- Painkiller can run six furlongs, but the heavy ground helped to pull her up at the finish. She may do better at Kurow if she makes the trip. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Royal Game maintained his reputation for consistency on the present trip by winning the Farewell Handicap. After being a trifle blow off the mark, he moved up at the homo turn, and never'looked m danger of defeat after landing in fiont soon after reaching the straight. Ho is racing well at present, and may get some more money before he returns home. Black Duke, having his secoud run during the day, was always handy, but the winner was too good for him, though he beat the others easily. Blade Duke has been racing below his.best, but only needs to strike form to win more than ono race the way he was. handicapped here. Mount Boa showed great speed, having a lead of four lengths after going three furlongs, but stopped badly. He would have been hard to beat had his rider shown some patience. Semper Paratus tailed off early, but he was running on at the finish, and he may do better before long. ' , ■ TROTTING EVENTS; The two trotting events provided interesting contests. Eiffelton Lass, looked like winning the Domain Trot till Ruth Logan came on the scene in the straight to beat her comfortably.l Lord Hatchlight, after beginning slowly, was a possibility at the -home turn, 'but made no impression on the other .pair over the iinal furlong. The favourite, Logan Fraser, broke at the start, 'while Royal Chenaulfc, almost as well backed,'had liis chance settled when Colorado capsized his driver five furlongs from homo, after a collision. ' . The three-year-old Red' Shadow, m J. Biyee's stable, was a hot favourite for the Win Chester Trot. He was in front most of the way, but Silver Bingeu wore him down in the last fifty ■ yards. Red. Shadow will make amends' soou, 'as the heavy track did not help ■ him. 'At the same time Silver Bingen •is smart. He had his first race on Thursday, when he got into trouble, but later in the ■ race showed patches of speed, which induced his connections to support, him to-day.

He is a four-year-old by Nelson Bingeu, and he is 'worth remembering. Jjord Matchlight was again third, making "three on end at the Meeting in that unprofitable position. Real Girl showed plenty of speed, but had no chance'with two of her rivals. . ■ ... ' •■..-'
