HAWKES BAY RACES

3IINOB EVENTS DESCEIBED

There was excellent weather for the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club's Spring Meeting on Saturday, and the track was in fast order. The totalisator showed the ruling tendency, and the turnover of £10,545 represented a drop of £2934 on last year's figures, l?jve favourites .wero led in ivin- ''• .' WIN FOR NEW OWNER. •: Call Again was not long in making a return for his new owner, Mr. G. C. Swinerds, into whose possession lie went enly .just prior'to the race for the Tomosua Hurdles. He was produced by much the fittest-looking horse in the race, and at the finish condition stood to him in considerably better stead than it did to the others. Over the early stages, the lightweights, Heartache and Kaokaoroa, made the pace, but Call Again.was never far away from them. After a mile had been compassed . Heartache had had enough, and Kaokaoroa was holding only a small advantage over Call Again. Fiery Comet, Tall Timber, and Wbakaue all attempted to displace Call Again along the back, but ho kept them at bay, and was just behind Kaokaoroa at the tarn into the straight. There he hit tlio front in a few strides, .- and after leading over the last fence had only to be ridden easily to go on to a comfortable three-length victory from Kaokaoroa, who held oft" the tubed Fiery Comet by another one and a-half lengths. Whakaue was a poor fourth, and Heartache a very bad last. The winner was a good favourite from "Whakaue and Tall Timber, with the second horse rank outsider of the field, aad paying nearly three Umc3 as much as the first horse. . FAVOURITES IN TRIAL, - Souchong, a chestnut gelding by Arausio from Suratura, made no race of the Trial Stakes. He drew number sixteen at the ' barrier, but A. E. Kcesing got him away smartly, and he had him lengths in front on the rail before a furlong had been torered, with Sympathetic, Black Acre, Gran' Chaco, and Pcwa nearest of the other*. He maintained practically his full advantage into the straight, where Sympathetic, Pewa, and Black Aero were his nearest attendants. Sympathetic then attempted the practically impossible, but although he closed the gap considerably ■ fee was still a couple of lengths to the bad ,at t6e post. Pewa hung on to SympaSbeHc'a quarters down the straight, and te was still there at the end. .Futurist

made a good run into fourth place, and next after her were Black Acre, Tinowaiata, and Gran Chaco.

Sympathetic was better fancied thaD Souchong, with Pewa and Futurist most .fought of the others. The favourite gave some trouble at the barrier, but did not suffer when the tapes were released. His effort was particularly striking, and he should not be long in following Souchong ,out of maiden ranks. ■ Pewa and Futurist .arc also worth keeping in mind. ACMIL JUST TOO LATE. Kahikatoa obtained a momentary ad-' vantage at the release of the barrier in the Glonaray Hack Handicap, but U. Gray steadied him going out of the straight, and let him fall in behind Kir Limond, Whakaari, and Fitzquex for the run down the back. He was still behind them entering the straight, but then he made his eiFort, and quickly taking command stove off a strong late challenge from Aernil at the half distance, and passed the judge with a head to spare. Fitzquex was another length back third. Acmil was near the back end of the field till tho straight was reached, but then put in some (filing work oi. the outside, and would have, beaten the winner with a few more yards to go. 'Fitzquex weakened over tho final bit-after looking the winner
