RESERVISTS V. H.M.S. DUNEDIN
Tn their spare time from. tailoring Jack T-1" like to take part man outdoor «me ashore,.and H.M.S. Dnnedm, the na"ship- of the New Zealand Division of he koyal-^y, has built up quite, a useful Rugby football team During the vessel's recent . Southern tour several matches were played, the team finishing up with a ..fine-win against Nelson. .On Saturday they, figured in a match against the local Koyal Naval Reservists at Athletic Park, find the result was something out of the ordinary in the way ot cur-tain-raisers. The team which represented the ship was.by no means at lull strength, as about two-thirds of the regular fifteen were absent on leave. The majority of those who took part, therefore, have played Rugby only very occasionally during the season, and the display given was consequently very creditable. The Reserves drew mainly on. the lower grades ot the local competitions for their team a comparatively young side taking the new. The team's were:—•■
11 M.S. Dunedin.—Leilcli; Gallachcr, ■Tremaine, Lis'sette; Smitherau, luilph; M'lntosh; Hamblyn; Dockerill, Craig, Smith, Shelley; Asher, Jcssel, and Boyle. ■ Ueservigts.E-Hogan; Finch, laplni, Nixon:- Baldwin, M'Gurk, Dennison; Cheese'man; King; Blair, Eraser, Graham, Rowe, O'Sullivau, and Johnson. The Reser.vists had the advantage of mm and wind in the first spell, and played up to such effect that they had put on 11 points before their opponents opened their account:' In the'forwards the Diracdin men were superior, and played with plenty of vim, but the back line lacked the iinish necessary to drive the attack:; home. Many times the team was within an ace of scoring, but too often'the chance was allowed to ; slip. At half-time the Keservists led 11 —3. In the second spell matters were very interesting, as play had not long been resumed before a try and a penalty goal brought the sailormen within two points of their opponents' score. Despite the will with which they strove to gain the lead, and the encouragement they received from the spectators, who found the match good entertainment, they were unsuccessful, and the match ended with the score Reservists 11, Dunediu 9. Finch and M'Gurk scored tries for the winners, Baldwin converting one and kicking a penalty goal. For H.M.S. Dunedin Gallacher scored two tries and Ralph kicked a penalty goal.
