BOWLINGS

EASTBOURNE'S OPENING

The Eastbourne Bowling Club, thanks to the happy situation of its green, is able each year to lead in the opening of the season, and on Saturday afternoon was favoured by fine but rather gusty weather. There was a large gathering of members and friends and visitors from other clubs. The president, Mr. C. H. Andrews, after apologising for the unavoidable absence of the member'for the district, Mr. W. Nash, who had a prior engagement, and the president of the centre, Mr. H. Mayer, who was indisposed, extended a welcome to all present and expressed pleasure at seeing on the green visitors from other clubs. He was also pleased to see so many ladies present. He drew attention to the excellent condition of the green, which was a tribute to the work of the greenkeeper, and which, in its setting of natural bush, made the »!ace a beauty spot. Members were all looking forward to a successful season. There were a number of new members, and other clubs would find that they had the material to give them a good game, win or lose. Mr. Andrews called upon Mrs. Andrews to throw the first jack and bowl, and declared the season open.

A number of friendly games of fourteen heads were played during the afternoon. Tea was served by the ladies.

The Kelburn and Thorndon Clubs are opening their greens next Saturday.
