TWO SHOPS GUTTED

WHAKATAKE, This Day.
-A fire in the early hours of this morning in Canning's Buildings gutted two shops. The fire started, in .Jaram's drapery- shop and spread, to .' Smallfleld's stationery shop. The stocks in both places were destroyed by fire, smoke, and water. "-..-. Tho brigade was smartly on the scenes ,aud extinguished: the fire in an amazingly short space of time, thus saving the other three shops and Smallfield's printing'works in the block. Jaram's stock was insured in the State :Kre Office for £950, less than half.the. value of, the stock. Smallfiekl's plant and stock was insured in. th 6 South British .and Northern. Union, and. ..Canning s Buildings ii* the State Fire Office. ■: The origin of the fire is a mystery.
