LONDON, 25th August.

On the second day of the match at Bristol between Australia and Gloucestershire ten thousand present saw Ponsford and Jackson make a very cautious start. The wicket enabled the bowlers to turn the ball. Jackson batted an hour for 8 before he was bowled. Gloucester's total was passed without further loss. Bradman was more restrained than usual. Ponsford carried his total past the half-century, but Kippax, M' Cabe, and Eiehardson all failed against the good bowling of Parker, Goddard, and Sinfield. At one stage four wickets fell for the addition of 2 runs.

Gloucester batted again in the presence of over seventeen thousand, on whom the gates were closed. Sinfield left at 21, but Dipper and Hammond defied the bowling. The latter was responsible for the county quickly wiping off its deficit. Hammond, playing his best innings against Australia this season reached his 50 in fifty-five minutes, including ten 4's. He then lifted Grimmett for a terrific 6. At stumps Gloucester were 62 ahead with seven wickets intact. AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
