PRIMARY GRADE

RANGITIKEI LEADING

The second rouud o£ the Rugby tournament between primary school representatives of Tarunaki, Rangitikei, Horowhenua, and Hutt YValley. was played on the Petone Recreation Ground yesterday. The conditions could hardly have been worse. A driving southerly across the field made accurate kicking difficult, and j kept the play, on one side nearly all the! time; and the rain made the ball and ground very heavy and slippery. Nevertheless, the boys gave a good display in both games. Rangitikei beat Taranaki by 10 points to 6, and Hutt Valley beat I Horowhenua by 16 points to 0. Rangitikei now have two wins to their credit. Taranaki and Hutt Valley one each, and Horowhenua none. To-morrow afternoon on the Hutt Recreation Ground the final round will be played. Horowhenua mcc' Rangitikei, and Hutt Valley meet Tarannki. After the games there will be a conference of delegates, and tlie tournament will conclude with a farewell dinner to be given to the teams by the Wellington Rugby Union. RANGITIKEI V. TARANAKI. Rangitikei and Taranaki played a fast, hard game, full of incident. In the first half Rangitikei had more of the game, and did all the scoring, but although after the change-over Taranaki were the more aggressive and all the scoring was done by them, they could put on only six in reply to "Rangitikei's first-half score of ten. Tho teams' were: — EangitiKei: Stock, Whitcoinbc. Eslcr, Karalau';"'W. Lloyd, Bending; Graham; Bcllis; Gregory, J. Lloyd, Kilkolly, Robertson, Goldsack, Shepherd, Blockley. Taranaki: M'Dowall; Tttbby, Robinson. •■\Vaiij THo, Grey; Sullivan; Topless; But-

Icr, Eugiiav, lvofoed, Aitken, Lillcy, Rich-' ards, i'enton. I'ioni tlic start Rangitikei had. tho better of the game, and it was not loDg before they scored, W. Lloyd potting a line goal iroui a handy position. Rangitikei 4, Taranaki o". Taranaki -were kept on the defensive, and soon a niiskick by a Taranaki player gave Karatau a chanco to pick up and dive over. His own kick failed. Rangitikei 7, Taranaki 0. Taranaki retaliated with a .strong rush, but were unsuccessful and it was not long before a great cross-field run by Karatau carried him right up to the Taranaki line, where he transferred to W. Lloyd, who scored. Lloyd missed with his kick. Rangitikei 10, Taranaki 0. Rangitikei cojitinued to force the pace, and in this half Taranaki rarely came within comfortable scor- ; ing distance of the Rangitikei line. Taranaki commenced the second half with a lightning rush, and in a likely position gained a free kick that went badly astray. It was Rangitikei's turn to defend, for Taranaki became very determined in attack. Tito and Robinson were conspicuous in several promising movements, but met with no success. Tito had three penalty kicks, which he sent very close, but he did not allow quite enough for the wind. A fourth kick was taken by Aitken, who, with tho wind in his favour, just got the ball over. Rangitikei 10, Taranaki 3. Just on time, Tavanaki made another fierce onslaught, and all but went over at one corner. A scrum resulted, and from it a penalty kick. Aitken was again successful, making the final score Rangitikei 10, Taranaki 6. The referee was Mr. C T. Andrew. HUTT V. HOFSOWHENUA. Tho game between Horowhenua and Hutt Valley waa strenuous, but it lacked the sparkle of the previous match. Hutt had no great difficulty in getting their llj-0 wiu. Tho teams were: — Hutt Valley: Hobbs; Perno, Phillips, Ifirmiu; Winnie, Hewson; Reid; Moore; Coe, Goodman, Kemp, Wilkinson, Horlor, Barry, Knowles. Horowhenua: Young; Cole, Coley, Taniahana; Bills, Hunter; Blenkhorn; Petter; Hudaon, Goldsmith, Coombe, Gilmour, Piper, Lee, Cummerfield. Hutt carried a lively attack into the enemy's territory from the start, and for a while kept Horowhenua penned in their twenty-five. After about ten minutes of play, Phillips received the ball just inside half-way, and evading several Horowhenua boys, scored between the posts. Winnie did not succeed with the kick. Hutt Valley 3, Horowhenua 0. A long "period of dull and fairly even play ended with Phillips again bursting through the Horowhenua team and scoring between the posts, and again Winnie's kick missed. Hutt "Valley 6, Horowhenua 0.

Neither team slackened in the second half, but Horowhenua, in spite of all their efforts, could not hold Hutt or make any headway against them. During a steady Hutt attack a scrum was ordered near the Horowhenua line, and the ball came to Winnie, who potted a goal from right under the bar. Hutt Valley 10, Horowhenua 0. -Coe, who had been working hard, was the next to score for Hutt with a quick dash across near one corner. Winnie failed to convert. Hutt Valley 13, Horowhenua 0. Moments later Winnie kicked a fine penalty goal to make the score at the end Hutt Valley 16, Horosvhomia 0.

The referee was Mr. G. H. Voyee.
