MM ADMITTED TO PROBATION"
An order that the accused's name be not further published was made by Mr. Woodward, 3.M., in tho Magistrate's Court to-day in the case in which a young-man was charged with having failed to account at Auckland for £20 to Used Cars, Ltd. The accused, when he appeared in the Court yesterday morning, elected trial by jury, and was remanded on bail to appear at Auckland next Monday. Later in the day, however, he changed his plea to one of guilty, and his case was heard before Mr. Woodward yesterday afternoon. In outlining • the case yesterday De-tective-Sergeant Holmes said that the accused had been employed as a salesman by Used Cars, Ltd., an Auckland firm, but had been dismissed in July for drunkenness. Nino days after his dismissal Ke went to one of the firm's clients aud collected £20 as a final payment on a truck, and then left for Wellington. Nothing previously was known against him; drinlb it was believed, was his chief trouble. ' Mr. Cornish said it was true that the accused had sometimes taken more liquor than was good for him, but he was not a confirmed drunkard, and he had an excpllent record. Prior to his arrest he had offered to repay the money, and apparently a letter Bent on his behalf by a firm of solicitors in Wellington and the police papers from Auckland had crossed. The Magistrate said he would like to see the ; solicitors' letter, and adjourned the case until this morning. When the case resumed this morning the accused was admitted to probation for one year, and he was directed to take out a prohibition order and make restitution. .^_____
