BANKING AGGREGATES

POSITION IN AUSTRALIA

Aggregates ot' the liabilities ami assets lof all banks in Australia for the "June I quarter,; as published in a "Commonwealth Gazette," illustrates the strain imposed on banking resources by the adverse trading and financial conditions. While total deposits have diminished by £19,524,123 on the year, advances, embraced in the item "all other assets," have increased by £16,----727,124. Taken on the quarter the relation of deposits to advances has improved. The fall in deposits, though continuing, has been reduced to £6,937,632. ■■ On the other hand, states the "bydney Morning Herald," as a result of necessary restriction by the banks, advances have turned downward by £9,869,5-10 irom the high peak of the March quarter. The decrease in deposits is entirely in current accounts, evidence of the smaller volume of business and reduced incomes. In the June quarter deposits totalled £309,144,542 against advances of £300,749,599; a year before deposits stood at £328,668,065 and advances at £284,022,475. If Government securities, which increased by nearly six millions, are considered with advances, the margin over deposits is accentuated. The movement in deposits and advances has as a complement a reduction in cash reserve. DEPLETED GOLD RESERVES. Through handing over their gold to the Commonwealth Bank, the banks have depleted their gold reserves by 20% millions, but have acquired an addition of nearly 13 millions in notes.
