THE PLAY DESCRIBED

There was a great burst of cheering as Porter led the Now Zealand fifteen on to the field. This was renewed with equal volume when the British team made its appearance, and both sides faced a battery of cameras. The teams then lined up, and together cheered the Vice-Regal party. Tho British team won tlio toss.

The president of the New Zealand Rugby Union introduced both teams to His Excellency, who went on to the ground amidst cheers. There was no advantage through either wind or sun when the teams took the field. The British team elected to play from the south end, and Porter kicked off for New Zealand. Prom the kick-off a line-out took place on the twenty-five flag, and the British team got the ball. Murray whipped it out to Spong, and it travelled along the back line to Reeve, whose kick upfield was taken by Nepia to get touch at the twenty-five flag. The New Zealand forwards pressed round from the line-out, and-M'Lean, M'Williams, Strang, and Lilburne cleared the way to past the half-way flag, where tho ball went out once more. A scrummage teok place, and the British team hooked the ball. Murray broke away on the blind side, passing to Spong, -who cut through brilliantly, passing to Welsh, who was crowded out by a bunch of forwards, and Now Zealand booted through. Hore, Hazlett, and Cottrell, in a passing bout, took play back over the half-way lino again, Porter gaining further ground, but Bowcott found touch with a timely kick to the sideline. The New Zealand forwards roused the crowd with a concerted dribbling rush which placed the Britishers for the first time on the de--1 f ensive, but a free-kick drove the home team back again, the ball sailing over the goal-line, and Nepia forcing. Porter dropped off again, and a penalty to New Zealand enabled Nepia to gain further ground, his kick just going out five yards off the New Zealand ade of the half-way line. New eZaland secured from tho lineout, and Corner found 'touch, gaining little ground. From tho ensuing lineoUt, the-British team secured tho ball, but were quickly smothered. From the scrummage M'Williams broke away, dummying cleverly at a fast pace, and passed to Porter, who crossed the line amidst tremendous excitement. Nepia's kick missed. New Zealand 3 Britain 0 Play had been in progress for six minutes. The British team attacked from the kick-out, and Strong made a characteristic burst. Ho was quickly smothered. BRITAIN EQUALISES. A scrummage followed ton yards outside tho All Black twenty-five. The New Zealand hookers were penalised for an infringement in the scrum, and Parker had a shot at goal, ten yards inside half-way, and the ball sailed over the bar amidst renowed cheering from the crowd.
