PETONE WIN EASILY.
In their match against the Wanganui eleven (Kempthorne Prosser's team) in the provincial final of the Chatham Cup, Petoiic had an easy win, defeating the visitors by'G goals to nil. ' JPetohe kicked off, and for the first I qiisirtfer .of -an'hour the.play, was confined ' to i IRTanganui's territory. The Petone players invariably secured possession, and Wanganui was kept on the defensive. Baistow and Leslie were prominent in attempts at goal, but the visiting defence was safe. The first goal came unexpectedly. Campbell transferred to M'Auslin, who sent in a high shot which beat Martini Petone attacked again and forced a corner. The leather went to Campbell, .whose shot at goal was wide. The Wanganui left-wing was prominent in a forward dash, but tost an opportunity when the Wanganui centre-forward over-ran himself. Petone kept up the pressure, and shortly before half-tiuie was called Leslie scored after havirfg received the ball from Knos and M'Auslin.
In'the early, stages of the second spell Martin, the Wanganui goalkeeper, was called on frequently, and the manner in which he cleared called for the commendation of the spectators. LeslieMiad a glorious opportunity to score when the goalie came out to meet him a few yards out of "goal, but the leather was sent high over the net. A centre from Baistow gave Leslie another chance, and this timo tho attempt was a. good one, but was well cleared. Leslie netted Petonc's third goal, receiving a good chance from a corner. Then Craig scored twice. Both' were individual efforts. In a forward dash Wanganui threatened the Petone goal, but the custodian was quite ■safe.■'. Shortly before time was called Knox snapped up an opportunity to score with a ."Ion? shot, and the game ended: Petone C, Wanganui 0.
