LONDON, Uth July^ New Zealand House is closing till the 2lst July in honour of the late Sir Joseph Ward.
DEFENCE LEAGUE'S TRIBUTE
The following resolution was passed in silence at a combined meeting of the General and Wellington District Councils of the National Defence League held last evening:—
"Ttmt this combined meeting of. the General and Wellington District Councils of the National Defence League of New Zealand desires to place on record its profound sense of the groat loss New Zealand and the Empire have sustained in the death of tho Bight Hon. Sir J. G. Ward, Bt., P. 0., and, in tendering its deepest sympathy to the members of his family, wishes to pay its tribute to the memory of a fai^seeing Imperialist and statesman, who never failed to place the interests of his country and of tho Empire first, who by his offer 'of a Dreadnought and by placing the' present Defence Act on, the Statute Book enabled New.Zealand to play such a worthy part iv the Great War, who subordinated party interests in order to serve in the National Cabinet during the War, and tlie early period of .reconstruction, and who, as« Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Leader of the Opposition, and in a multitude of other ways during a life-time of devoted service to his country, set an example which should serve as an inspiration to others to follow.7'
■ The following cablegram has been received by the Speaker of the Legislative Council (Sir Walter Carncross) from Sir Howard d'Egivillo, secretary of the United Kingdom Branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association:—
"Please convey to the family of the late Sir Joseph Ward and members of your branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association our sense of the loss of a distinguished statesman. Retain grateful memory of his valuable' services to association."
