EMPIRE FREE TRADE CLOSE CALL FOR LABOUR British Official Wireless. (Received 11th July, 11 a.m.) EUGBY, 10th July. The result of the North Norfolk byelection necessitated by the elevation to the peerage of Mr. Noel Buxton, formerly Minister of Agriculture, wai doclarcd to-day as follows: — Lady Noel Buxton (Lab.). 14,821 T. A. Cook (C.) 14,642 I The new member is the wife of th« late Labour member, who at the last election, won the seat in. a three-cornered, contest, in which tlio Liberal candidate polled over 3000. The main issue at the election was tho Empire Freo Trade policy which was strongly advocated by Lord Beaverbrook, who addressed a largo number; of meetings in support of the Conservative candidate. Compared with the figures * of the last election, there was an increase ofi nearly 2000 in the Conservative vote and of 300 in the Labour voto. The figures at the General Election were: Noel Buxton (Lab.), 14,544; T. B. A. M. Cook (C), .12,661; Mrs. C. F, Hoffman (L.), 3403.
