JOHN MURRAY'S NOVELS
: ' 'The Mammon ,ot Bighteousnoss,'' by P. C. 'Wxjfn■ (London:' John Murray) is uUerly different in setting and .style from his. former.l works. It is a mystery story, 'excellently told,' neither. obvious in plot' nor too obscure. Contrary to Wron's 'usual locations,, the scene is laid ;in England, and the author has constructed :tbe whole, story from one. curious incident observed by an eye-witness;. ;Hc; a new arrival^ in England'from service, with the King's Biflesin Africa, has. no motive for connecting the' cause'with effect, and'thus live perfect'sequence' of the wtiolc drama'is lost. - Some of the best scenes in the book are laid in the law Courts. A young- man, repressed by his mother all his life,-falls in love with a girl of Italian extraction; but of the bitter:; family- "opposition .and disapproval,'lie'.breaks off the engagement. The gi'rl■-.ia-'.found: murdered: -Arouud this-, bare-outline of the '• case -Wren hus built a really 'fine story.. :' Mystery, romance,' and' excellent- character drawing c'ombino to'miilte. a novel'of more .than usual interest.. ■ •■; ■'■'.
