GREATLY BENEFITED

MR. TROUP RETURNS

CANADIAN TARIFF INCREASES

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. Greatly improved in health as a result of his trip across the Pacific and back, Mr. G. A. Troup (Mayor of Wellington) arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi last evening. Mr. Troup left Auckland by the Aorangi and, spent only a few days at Vancouver and Seattle, catching tin boat again for the return trip. "Naturally, I did not have time to make an investigation of present con-, (Iltions in Canada," Mr. Troup said. "However, I took the opportunity of discussing the new Canadian tariff with prominent business men, with special reference to the increased duty on New Zealand butter. My view was that, instead of erecting further tariff barriers, more should be done in the direction of mutual arrangements concerning tariffs between tho various parts of. the Empire, especially^ as all other countries are erecting tariff barriers against the British Empire. A j number' of people in Canada seem to think that New Zealand may in its turn increase the duty on some Canadian article. /I pointed out that as the- balance of trade was against New Zealand, 'it was quite possible that there would be retaliation in timber duties. In that case it would . only mean that Canada was taking money from, its timber merchants to give to its dairy fanners. During the trip Mr. Troup was welcomed by tho municipal authorities in Suva, Honolulu, Victoria, 8.C., Vancouver, and Seattle, and was shown the greatest courtesy. Mr. Troup leaves for Wellington to-night. "
